A 58-year-old man in Singapore was arrested on Jan. 19 after he allegedly physically assaulted and sprayed people with a fire extinguisher in Yishun.

In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said that the incident occurred at around 9:30am at 920 Yishun Avenue 2, which is the address of the Yishun Integrated Transport Hub (ITH).

In a Facebook post on Jan. 20, public transport operator Tower Transit Singapore commended its interchange supervisor and bus captain for assisting in the man's capture.

Captured by interchange supervisor and bus captain

In the post, Tower Transit said that the man allegedly physically assaulted a female service ambassador and also sprayed commuters with a fire extinguisher.

Interchange supervisor Faisal and bus captain Zaki promptly confronted the man, following him into the adjoining Northpoint City mall to safeguard members of the public.

However, the man did not stop his acts and allegedly continued discharging the fire extinguisher inside the mall before throwing it at a shopper.

According to the transport operator, Faisal then rushed forward and managed to restrain him until police officers arrived.

Tower Transit lauded Faisal, adding that it "was not the first time Faisal has shown such courage".

The interchange supervisor had earlier stopped a person from using a fire extinguisher to smash the windscreens of several buses at the ITH bus park in 2022.

"We are immensely proud of both IS Faisal and BC Zaki. They acted decisively, putting themselves in danger to protect the community and their colleagues," Tower Transit wrote.

Arrested for alleged public nuisance

A 73-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in a conscious state following the incident.

The police confirmed that the 58-year-old man was arrested for public nuisance and unsound mind.

He is also being investigated for voluntarily causing hurt and mischief.

Investigations are ongoing.
