Subsidised meals for needy in Ayer Rajah

SINGAPORE - Low-income families in Ayer Rajah can now benefit from a community-assistance programme aimed at providing them with subsidised meals from 28 hawker stalls in the area.
Under the Food Connect grassroots initiative, low-income families can receive monthly redeemable food vouchers worth $25 to be used at food stalls in Teban Gardens Market and Food Centre.
They can also opt to receive monthly supplies of basic food and household essentials, instead of the vouchers.
Food Connect is one of three components of the Ayer Rajah Community Hearts (ARCHearts) community-assistance programme launched yesterday by Adviser to Ayer Rajah Grassroots Organisations and West Coast GRC MP Foo Mee Har.
At a briefing about her vision and plans for Ayer Rajah, Madam Foo said that 25 families will benefit from Food Connect initially. But the aim is to reach out to 100 households by the end of year, she added.
ARCHearts also includes Youth Connect and Silver Connect. The latter is aimed at elderly residents who either live alone or have difficulty moving around.
Under Silver Connect, volunteers will visit homes of elderly residents to ensure that elder- friendly fittings have been installed, or to explain various government help schemes to them, among other aims.
Youth Connect is targeted at young people, aged 12 to 19, from disadvantaged families. They will receive mentoring and coaching from trained volunteers.
About $260,000 will be spent to benefit some 800 to 1,000 households through ARCHearts.
