The qualification round merely reduced the large number of eligible nations from 47 to 24 for the Asian Cup finals. That means more than 1/2 of the entrants made it to the tournament. S'pore had to pip HK and India as the 2 strongest contenders in our group. We didn't have to deal with the likes of Japan, South or North Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia etc. or even the South East Asian powerhouses like Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia.

There was a time back in 1980, that S'pore beat North Korea 3-1 and China 1-0 in the Olympic Games qualifying round for Asia. The talent is out there, but far too many promising S'poreans give up on a career in football after NS and a university education.
