Does Yang have to come back to attend the court or appear online?

He just have to get a local law firm to acknowledge receipt of the writ of summons on his behalf. But the problem is which Sinkie law firm dares to do that? Lim Tean? Siao kia Ravi?

Desperate lawyers will do this. Not the typical corporate types.
Making a big issue out of something irrelevant.
If you go jiu hu, ministers and judges live in gomen owned colonial era homes. But these homes are getting less popular due to heavy maintenance and neglect. Its being sold off to developers.

If he returns, he'll be arrested. Maybe even detained indefinitely under ISA for sedition.

Best bet is to let the case be tried here in absentia. He'll lose for sure - it's a kangaroo court after all - and will have to pay damages, but with his wealth he can continue to enjoy life overseas, probably join his son in Harvard.

He has to file a document called Memorandum of Appearance within 8 days after receiving the writ. He's overseas. So he needs to engage a local law firm to file it.
Memorandum of Appearance is not a receipt. It's an intention to the Court that you wish to defend the claim.

As far as Writ is concerned, he already acknowledged liao with that public post.

Read my post again:

Where did I mention defamation?

Maybe you were just wearing diapers when even Catholic priests and church workers were labelled Marxist and detained without trial under the ISA.
