Yale-NUS: Up to 50% could be foreign students

2011SINGAPORE - International students can make up to half of the Yale-National University of Singapore (NUS) liberal arts college's intake, even as the guideline for local universities stands at 20 per cent for the admission of foreign students.

This was confirmed by Yale-NUS college's dean of faculty Charles Bailyn yesterday. He added that Singaporean students must make up at least half of the intake.

Prof Bailyn told MediaCorp that the proportion of Singaporeans could be higher, as there is no requirement that the other 50 per cent must be international students. The proportion will be determined by the quality of the applicant pool, he said.

This agreement on student admission was disclosed in Yale Daily News on Tuesday.

President Richard Levin told the campus newspaper that "we are prepared to go to a substantially higher percentage (of international students) in the college than in the university".

Prof Bailyn also reportedly said the Yale-NUS college administrators will focus on attracting talented students so as to create a strong academic programme to uphold Yale's reputation.

In response to MediaCorp's queries, NUS vice-president (University and Global Relations) Lily Kong, however, said that up to 80 per cent of the places at the Yale-NUS college will be available to Singaporean students, adding that the majority of students are expected to be Singaporeans.

Prof Kong explained that NUS will maintain an overall cap of 20 per cent for international students but this proportion could vary within individual schools and faculties, with the majority of the places given to locals. She added that this approach will be adopted by Yale-NUS College.

Echoing Prof Bailyn, she said the composition of the student population would depend on the quality of applicants

Prof Bailyn also told Media- Corp that the admission criteria for Yale-NUS college will be modelled on Yale's approach but the hiring committee for the college will be made up of participants from both universities.

Yale-NUS college will start with an intake of 150 students in 2013 and eventually grow its cohort to 1,000 students.

The statistics are just to make Sinkies feel good. Behind your backs, the Sinkie govt will go to the ends of the world and give free scholarships and PRs to foreigners and hey presto, they are Sinkie students now and eligible to study at this university.
