While Singaporeans largely pulled together to help each other during the recent haze crisis, a minority saw fit to spread rumours and cause unnecessary anxiety, Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim said in Parliament on Monday.

"Their impact today is far greater, because circulated virally online and through text messaging, they reach many more people than they could have in the past," he said.

He cited the example of how prominent blogger Ravi Philemon alleged that an unnamed friend said there were nine million masks being brought into Singapore, but none were for the public.

One website, The Real Singapore, also put up a post titled "We should not play the blame game over the haze problem" which was falsely attributed to Tampines GRC MP Irene Ng.

But there were many individuals who stepped up or volunteered to help distribute masks. Dr Yaacob highlighted how undergraduate Jeremy Chua set up the SG Haze Rescue page on Facebook, which brought together Singaporeans willing to help give out masks, educate the public or even open their homes to provide respite from the haze.

Responding to a question by Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng on what the Government will do if there are malicious attempts to spread untruths, Dr Yaacob said it will ask for a correction so that the right information is put up online.

He added: "It depends on the manner in which the information has been created. If it's really false, if it's really alarming, there are levers in which the Media Development Authority can take."

This includes asking the site to remove the content, under the automatic class licence acts which websites fall under.

Come on speak something sensible in Parliament!!!!!!!!!!!

There are so many issues to talk - some paid GST vouchers, some given utilities vouchers, Singapore overflowing and bursting at its seams with so many people here, overcrowded hospitals, why masks were not given during the suffocating haze, why people still had to work when the readings hit above 400psi, as compared to the days of SARs when even thermometers were given, low salary of stinking toilet cleaners, cleaners at food centres and guards.

Last but no the least, parley on your high salaries, about acts of nepotism where so many children of prominent people present and past holds high offices. Why someone did not pertform NS, etc...

That's what Parliament is for - to parley (talk in groups) sensibly and not "cry" over some silly issues like a child crying over the loss of his candy.

Please wake up. Don't make fools of yourselves further.

From the background I think he is at some HDB permitted gardening area where he might be hallucinating and mistaken it as Kampong. And I think he must be extremely happy," Heng Ah no flood, csn touch banana."

If hundreds of thousands of anti-PAP Netizens cannot come up with dirt on the powers-that-be then all this shows is the complete inability of the S'pore Internet community to hurt the govt in any significant way.

Many months have passed and the only episode that showed Netizens had a slither of power was the Brompton bike episode. Even then thousands of Netizens had the cheek to congratulate themselves and take credit for the CSI work of just one single individual. Since then, squat! Utterly hopeless. Utterly useless. And they talk about regime change in 2016?! Complete fantasy.

Bloody Minister whose children will be exempt from NS.

But to say more, he sounds worse than Goebbels or the http://www.welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com/. At least those 2 were funny.

There is an obvious lack of passion and conviction in whatever BS that he was mouthing in parliament - but he won't resign because he knows that no other idiot will pay him the $2million that he gets for talking crap. In other words, this guy has no principle.
