KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyers of Liberty has called on the government to help save a Malaysian citizen Prabu Pathmanathan, who will be executed at Changi Prison in Singapore on Friday for alleged drug trafficking.
Its adviser N Surendran said the government must make act to save Prabu from the gallows.
“Singapore must halt the execution of Malaysian citizen Prabu Pathmanathan at Changi prison on October 26, 2018.
“The family of Prabu have been informed that he will be executed at Changi Prison for alleged drug trafficking.
“The family were only informed of the Friday hanging on Oct 20 by a letter from the Singapore Prison Services, which is less than one weeks notice.
“In the same letter, the family has been asked to make the ‘necessary funeral arrangements’,” he said through a statement issued today.
“The continued use of the death penalty for drug offences is a violation of the International Covenant On Civil And Political Rights (ICCPR), of which Singapore is a state party.
“The death penalty is cruel and inhumane, and particularly so when used in drug cases which results in the execution of drug mules from poor socio-economic backgrounds.
“On October 13, 2018, the deputy foreign minister Datuk Marzuki Yahya had assured Malaysians that the government would come up with a solution for Malaysians facing execution abroad,” he added.
On Oct 15, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong had said the Malaysian government would go ahead with plans to abolish the death penalty. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
