Dr Yaacob
During the parliamentary sitting today (14 Jan), Communications and Information Minister Yaacob Ibrahim said authorities were aware of the vulnerability of the software tool used by one of the government websites before it got hacked last month.
In early Dec last month, the People’s Association’s (PA) website and 16 related sites were hacked by some unknown hackers who called themselves “HighTech Brazil HackTeam”.
Dr Yaacob said that the agencies using the software tool had been told of the vulnerability earlier but due to lapse in maintenance, the software was not updated.
He said that after the incident, the agency responsible for maintenance has stepped up its maintenance regime to ensure that checking and auditing is done in a timely manner.
Even though the “HighTech Brazil HackTeam” has claimed responsibility, Dr Yaacob said that the police have yet to establish the actual identities of the perpetrators. The police have requested assistance from their foreign counterparts.
Dr Yaacob assured the House that there was no evidence of leakage of visitors’ personal information.
He added that regular review by the team within IDA and government is helping the Govt to ensure that new measures are put in place to assure the integrity of Govt systems.
An MP asked how the Govt can ensure that SingPass used by the many Govt websites is secured from hacking.
Dr Yaacob replied, “To your question about SingPass, it has been working quite well, but we’re not resting on our laurels, we will continue to monitor the situation and thus far, the system is safe and secure.”
