Hainan was initially desirable to use bridge but later considering typhoon, preferred tunnel. Then later due to cost of tunnel, considered half-bridge + half-tunnel.

This 123km Bo Hai Bay 渤海湾 between Dalian 大连 <-> Yan Tai 烟台 I can see it as a stepping stone for the next one to Taiwan which is about 141km if made between Tao Yuan (near Taipei International Airport) 桃源 <-> Ping Tan 平潭 Island.

The 1st 123km one is shorter and easier because the north usually don't get strong typhoon. Taiwan gets lots of typhoon yearly plus many earthquakes yearly.

To build anything must be made typhoon proof and quake proof. Or else fuck spider.

The north seldom have such strong natural deserters. But once in a fucking century may get 唐山大地震, 9.x scale one, TUA TUA KEE.

Today no surface warship of any country can escape sinking by PLA rocket army on any open water surface globally. But The missiles are not cheap, so only at least 3500Tons onward will be worth the missile, otherwise missile cost more than targets, losing money deal to kill.
