目前，首批28辆VT-4主战坦克已经交付给第一个国外用户——泰国皇家陆军。再加上此前乌克兰交付的全部49辆T-84“堡垒”-T主战坦克，泰国皇家陆军实际上已经也拥有中南半岛上性能水平最强的主战坦克部队。从总体性能上看，VT-4主战坦克不仅火力强、防护能力出色、机动性好、信息化程度高，而且非常易于训练和上手。从前不久泰国皇家陆军对外公开展示VT-4主战坦克的训练以及实弹射击情况来看，可以说其装甲部队的官兵已经基本掌握了该型主战坦克的操作以及作战能力。
通过泰国皇家陆军装备VT-4主战坦克的示范作用，实际上等于为其他与中国存在军贸关系的东南亚国家做了一个最好的范例，使得这些国家更加信任中国这种自主研发的新型主战坦克。这一点对于当前的马来西亚陆军来说，非常重要。目前，马来西亚陆军所装备的主战坦克仅为从波兰进口的PT-91。该型坦克从苏制T-72M1改进而来的，在性能上完全无法与新加坡陆军的“豹”2SG相提并论。而且，马来西亚陆军装备PT-91主战坦克只有48辆，新加坡陆军装备的“豹”2SG主战坦克却多达196辆。因此，中国北方工业公司此次展出的VT-4主战坦克对于马来西亚陆军来说，是很有吸引力的。
当然，从东南亚各个岛国的地理环境和条件来讲，VT-4主战坦克多达50余吨的战斗全重确实有可能存在一些通过性的问题。对于泰国来说，由于其平原地区较为广泛，适合于VT-4主战坦克的大范围作战。而在东南亚岛国国内，很多道路和桥梁会无法承载VT-4主战坦克这么重的作战车辆。那么，这时就需要VT-5轻型坦克的登场亮相了。
