Presidential hopeful Tan Kin Lian admits that he has encountered ‘difficulties’ in raising funds for his election campaign as the donations have been ’slow’ in coming.
In an email interview with the state media, Mr Tan wrote that several companies and individuals that he approached for the campaign donations declined:
“They prefer to be ‘neutral’. I understand, as they are afraid that their donation will be frowned on by the people in power,” he said.
The funds will be used for the the printing and distribution of campaign material, outreach activities, rallies, rental of premises, logistics, contractors, sound systems, and the production of online videos, of which $48,000 is needed as the deposit for contesting the election.
‘I am working on a modest, shoestring budget, and will carry out some of the outreach activities and rallies – only when the funds are available,’ he added.
Another candidate Dr Tan Cheng Bock reportedly has no problem with raising funds whose campaign budget could hit $500,000.
It is not known whether Dr Tan and Mr Tan will be granted ‘permission’ from the PAP regime to contest against its endorsed candidate as strictly speaking, both do not meet the requirements of a presidential candidate as stipulated under the law.
