The Workers' Party is new? Give them a chance to learn? Did you know WP won the Anson by election in 1961 that almost destroyed the PAP? Lucky for Singapore and Singaporeans, they didn't succeed. MAJULAH SINGAPURA. MAJULAH PAP.

[1]The Anson by-election was held to fill the Legislative Assembly seat left vacant by the death of People’s Action Party (PAP) assemblyman Baharuddin bin Ariff.

Nomination day was set for 10 June 1961 with polling to take place on 15 July. Five candidates – Chee Phui Hung (Singapore Alliance), K. M. Ibrahim (Singapore Congress), Ismail Haji Hussain (Liberal Socialist Party), Mahmud Awang (PAP) and David Marshall (Workers’ Party) – vied for the seat.

The by-election saw a split within the PAP as left-wing pro-communist members withdrew their support for the PAP candidate and backed Marshall, chairman of the Workers' Party, instead. Marshall secured 3,598 votes to win by a narrow margin against M. Awang, who polled 3,052 votes. This was the PAP’s second by-election defeat in less than three months, after having lost in the Hong Lim by-election held earlier on 29 April.

After the by-election, 13 PAP assemblymen defected and joined the opposition to form a new party on the extreme left of the political spectrum, the Barisan Sosialis.

Thus in the course of three months, the (Singapore) Government had its voting strength reduced from 43 seats to a bare majority of 27 in the 51-member Assembly.

In 1988 Barisan Sosialis merged into The Workers Party.

WP has to be one of the most useless political parties on the face of this earth. It has been around for more than half a century and still has not come anywhere near to forming a government.

That was probably the last time Singapore saw true democracy and the last time when Singaporean politicians weren't mindless yes men.

give and take lah... we need both pap and wp's existence but opposition always out numbered and i find them to be more disadvantageous in the way they are perceived by the public.

i am neutral cos the society pap gahment built gives me time to talk bird here in this forum. :o

I agreed the current WP team is the most useless party.
A matter of facts WP is a no balls party.
WP under LTK & SL will not go further any more.
WP only concerned their 16k pay and will always support PAP policy.

Nobody said WP is a new party. WP is new to winning and running a GRC.

Want to debate at least not be disingenuous.

Violet Poh: The basics of integrity is missibg in WP. Humble, they are not. Eager to learn , they lack. Taking stock , they don't. Pushing blame - they're no. 1

Qiu Yung: WP lacks everything that is needed for Singapore to continue to be successful.

First, integrity. Have you seen a party that goes to such great length to defend their friends? Why? And now that the government has decided to apply to the court for independent accountants to make sure government grants given to their town council are spent as they are meant to be spent, Sylvia Lim said this would derail their work of getting their financials done. Derail them? How? Why would it?

Second, talent. Is there anyone in WP who can represent Singapore in the international arena so that other countries will take us seriously when they speak? CSM? LLL? Png Eng Huat?

Third, domestic.
Have they come up with any credible alternatives other than to tell the government to do more or to do less?

WP is new to having 7 elected MPs in parliament and soon they will be new to having more than 20. :p

Have you been living under a rock all these years?

The only viable party presently is SDP. Very clear in its policy suggestions and manifesto..........no cock story like co-driver and first world lumparliament shit.......and then spend most of the time wayang in lumparliament......

Let it be told honestly and clearly now..........past performance is no indication of present and future performance......apply to PAP and WP.

Wake up people! Vote for the youths. Vote for the future generations. Vote with a young and honest heart.

LKY was 91 years old when he kicked the bucket. He still hadn't learnt anything. That's quite some record to break.

Yes. We should expand the NCMP scheme so that more opposition ex-MPs can join in parliament and learn from all 87 PAP MPs.
