Gerald Giam queried by PAP MPs on training needs, social mobility

By Tessa Wong
Workers' Party Non-Constituency MP Gerald Giam found himself under fire from three MPs from the People's Action Party, who asked how he arrived at various assertions in his Budget speech.

Mr Giam on Wednesday afternoon had called on the Government to give companies more money to provide on-the-job training, as this is 'recognised as one of the most effective forms of training, especially for those in vocational work.'

At the end of the speech, he referred to a video that Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam screened on Feb 17 in Parliament when he delivered the Budget Statement.

That video had featured 11-year-old Tan Ai Li, who spoke about her dream of buying a house for her parents when she grows up. Ai Li comes from a low-income family.

This is what is meant by more pressing matters to consider.
