MANILA: China's efforts to stake its claim to most of the South China Sea should spark fear around the world, with military conflict possible, Philippine President Benigno Aquino told AFP on Tuesday (Apr 14).

In an exclusive interview, Aquino also warned that China's increasingly assertive actions raised the spectre of other nations having access cut to international shipping lanes and fishing grounds in the sea. "Does it engender fear? Yes, I think it should engender fear for the rest of the world," Aquino said when asked to assess Chinese government moves in recent years to assert its sovereign claims in the sea.

Aquino said that, while he did not believe China intended to engage in a military conflict over the territorial disputes with the Philippines and other Asian nations, that was a possibility. "The question of it escalating to something beyond everybody's control should be at the top of the minds of all world leaders," he said.

China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, including areas just off the coasts of other Asian nations, using an assertive demarcation line that first appeared on Chinese maps in the 1940s. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have overlapping claims.

The contested claims have for decades made the sea one of Asia's key flashpoints, and tensions have risen in recent years as China has moved to assert its authority over the areas. Following a tense standoff between Chinese maritime patrol vessels and the Filipino Navy in 2012, China took control of a rich fishing ground called Scarborough Shoal that is within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone.

Satellite images have also shown China recently embarking on major construction activities to expand Chinese-controlled reefs and islets in the Spratly Islands, one of the biggest archipelagos in the sea. The images published this month on the website of the Center for Strategic and International Studies showed a flotilla of Chinese vessels dredging sand onto a feature known as Mischief Reef.

Images of other outcrops in the Spratlys showed aircraft runways appearing from jungle, smooth-sided solid masses where there once was coral, and man-made harbours replacing natural reefs.

Aquino said China was building two airstrips on the expanded land formations, which posed defence concerns for the Philippines. "With these new features, the two airstrips that come to my mind, once operational, puts into effective range the entire country," Aquino said.

"The (Chinese) turnaround time, the sustainability of operations, etcetera, are enhanced by all of these airstrips, and potentially other naval ports."

The Pinoy leaders are too lazy, corrupted or incompetent to invest in building up a credible navy and acquiring some really good WMDs, and they simply are hoping for the rest of the world to come do to their aid. The Pinoys should learn from Singapore that nobody owes you a living. Rely on yourself!

I am inclined to agree with you. They once was already a thriving and advancing economy at a time when Singapore was struggling to establish itself. The rest is history. These lazy leaders steeped in corruption esp. during the Marcos' era ensure that the country sinks deeper and deeper. That's why they cling to their only living national icon/hero ever so gratefully ( Manny Pacquiao ). A case of empty vessels making the most noise. Always blowing hot and cold with their erstwhile US colonial masters. At the present moment, they are blowing hot by sucking up to the US; trying to escalate the situation by getting the UN and Americans involved; including using Asean to sing their cause. They talk so much and continue to amass great wealth while leaving the rest of their countrymen to wallow below the line of poverty. These scums deserve to be treated like clowns by China. Hope China reclaims all the reefs and gets to eyeball the Philippines just a swim away! That would be so interesting!

Pinoyland is finished, just like Nippon.....

there really is nothing much philippines can do. They had US managed Clark air base and subic naval base but nationalistic sentiments chased those off . Otherwise, china would be very cautious about claiming islands off the philippines. Due to this, more nannies are forced to work overseas instead of earning a living as pub girls for US servicemen.

Singapore saw the chance and offered Changi naval base to US, although on a smaller scale although I think, US offered to build a base in malaysia, but was rejected by equally nationalistic gomen there.

Even with US bases, no country can stop China but China itself. If US cannot stop Russia, don't even think of stopping China.....and Russia is already a vassal state of China.

don't underestimate the USA and the West. historically, the Russians have screwed the Chinese for centuries (Ming-Qing-ROC-PRC). just refer to the lands that the Russians had stolen/annexed from China over the centuries. beware of the cunning and deceptive Russian bear !

Not to worry. Filipiniland has sky-high rubbish dumps to act as the first line of defence !!!:o

Russia can do so to China just like any country can, when China is on its knees. In the present context, Russia is buckling under US and EU sanctions but Russia is the country that is bailing out Greece and not the EU, and China is too powerful now for any country to mess with it. To believe otherwise is to continue living under the rock.

Just Chinese tourism alone around the world, the rest of the world is not able to handle the millions of Chinese tourists, that shows how China will rule the world in this century.

I don't know much about money politics. it is just strange at how history will always repeat itself. anyway, almost every China dynasty at the peak of its power was the most powerful and prosperous nation in the world. the PRC has a lot to live up to continue the legacy of the long and great 5000 years of proud Han Chinese history.
