A flamingo believed to be the oldest of its kind in the world has died at the age of 83 in Australia.

Greater the flamingo was put to sleep on Friday due to complications brought about by arthritis and old age, officials at Adelaide Zoo said.
The flamingo, named after its species, arrived at the zoo in 1933 and was a popular attraction.

Flamingos are wading birds with a very specialised diet. They have far shorter life spans in the wild.

Greater flamingos - scientific name Phoenicopterus roseus - are usually larger than lesser flamingos and are characterised by pale plumage and pink bills.
Greater the flamingo, who survived a bad beating by a group of teenagers in 2008, was a zoo favourite, officials said.

"Greater is best known for being the world's oldest flamingo and the last greater flamingo to have resided in Australia," Elaine Bensted, Zoos South Australia chief executive, told Agence-France Presse news agency.

"Although this is an extremely sad loss for us all, it was the right thing to do," she said, adding that there was no treatment that could have improved the flamingo's quality of life.

The flamingo is survived by companion Chilly the Chilean flamingo, 65, said to be the last flamingo in Australia.
Zoo officials said they would keep a close watch on Chilly to see if there was any reaction to Greater's death.

They were also considering a memorial for Greater, they said.

I thought u were talking about Lee Con You. Its just a lousy flamingo.

Since he so stingy & washing his undies in 5 stars hotel, they will wash & recycle the diapers, until, it is tattered & torn.

since he's eating well, such as abalone, shark's fin and thousand year old ginseng, his shit can be recycled too.

They will cremate his shit & look for crystals & pointout his immortality... ha ha ha ha

That means no lion dance & firecrackers on standby??

Even if that old bastard dies, PAP would rather employ foreigners for the lion dance.

Dear The Real SIngapore,

I will like to share the current situation of Singapore lion dance after reading a post on FB that is related to Singapore 50th national day celebration. BTW, please do not reveal that I am the sender.

Chinese New year is at the corner and Lion dance is very common everywhere, especially this year with the movie 'The Lion man'. But do you realise most of the lion dancer during CNY are Foreigners? For your info. although SG is very small, but our CNY lion dance market is actually the biggest in south east asia.
Every year, 'helpers' from various country like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, China, Taiwan and Hongkong will come into Singapore with social visit pass to earn a living during CNY, earning our 'Strong' currency.

For such 'helpers', they are usually paid $40 per day(excluding ang pow), food and stay are covered by our local team. For example this yr, there are at least 120 Vietnamese and 60 Thai 'helpers' in SG. They usually are from schools that are sponsored by Singaporeans back in their country to source manpower.

So far, no authorities have taken any action to enforce. CNY lion dance is only control by 'Cai qing permit' given by the Wushu federation. But there will not be any enforcement done by them. So called, there will be check conducted by the patrol police. But during CNY period, their manpower will also be very tight! That why there are still 'Illegal' lion dance team going around the market to collect $$.

Please assist to create some awareness to the authorities to protect our local lion dancers!
