WASHINGTON: The world is getting warmer, as greenhouse gases reach historic highs and Arctic sea ice melts, making 2013 one of the hottest years on record, international scientists said on Thursday.

The annual State of the Climate report 2013 is a review of scientific data and weather events over the past year, compiled by 425 scientists from 57 countries.

"These findings reinforce what scientists for decades have observed: that our planet is becoming a warmer place," said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration administrator Kathryn Sullivan.

Global temperatures were among the warmest on record worldwide, with four major datasets showing 2013 ranked between second and sixth for all-time heat.

"Australia observed its warmest year on record, while Argentina had its second warmest and New Zealand its third warmest," said the report.

Sea surface temperatures also rose, making last year among the 10 warmest on record.
The Artic marked its seventh warmest year since records began in the early 1900s.

Artic sea ice cover was the sixth lowest since satellite observations began in 1979.
On average, global sea levels also rose, keeping pace with a trend of adding about three millimeters per year over the past two decades, it said.

Methane, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that come from burning fossils fuels "continued to rise during 2013, once again reaching historic high values," said the report.

For the first time, the daily concentration of C02 in the atmosphere exceeded 400 parts per million (ppm), as measured by the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, a year after observational sites in the Arctic observed C02 at 400 ppm in spring 2012.

The report, published in the peer-reviewed Bulletin of the American Meterological Society, offers a "detailed scientific snapshot of what's happening in our world," said the group's executive director Keith Seifer.

This is sad. And nobody really gives a fuck. Just observe the local sentiment when the F1 event comes in September, suddenly Earth Day is wiped out from memory. Primary school teachers tell their students to turn off the lights on Earth Day, they should tell them to protest the hosting of F1 race, but do they? Thanks for bringing up this issue, but no one here cares that the polar bears are the ones feeling the impact more than the blokes here.

Cheers!

It's a no-brainer. Just look around you and you'll be overwhelmed by evidence of global warming. When I was a kid, we even wore sweaters to school on cold rainy days in January and February. And nights were always cool. Today we sweat in our T-shirts even when it's raining.

It's just a bunch of thick-headed climate change deniers and the oil lobby bastards trying to pull wool over our eyes so that it's biz as usual. Fuck 'em.

As for Sinkies, there's zero awareness. Not even in this forum. Sad.

Agreement.

there are several other natural-occurring factors that contribute to climate change. mankind's contribution to "global warming" may be measurable but pale in comparison to natural and extra-planetary causes. for example, the sun can emit planetary-sized solar flares periodically that can overwhelm earth from time to time. the worst for this to happen is when the earth goes through her cyclical magnetic polarity flip, i.e. when the magnetic field shielding the planet from the sun's rays is in chaotic flux and the rays can burn away the atmosphere. contrary to drought, dryness, and warming data currently bandied around by global warming prophets, periods of prolonged warming and drought existed long ago before historical data was first recorded. thanks to studies on trunk rings on trees and other indirect science, california was found to be dryer and warmer in ancient times....

Absolutely Agree.
