Changi General Hospital offers 50% discount to emergency patients who see GPs first

Hit by a severe bed crunch that has patients waiting in a tent for a hospital bed, Changi General Hospital (CGH) is offering a 50 per cent discount at its emergency department for patients who see a general practitioner first.


It launched the GPFirst scheme on Monday - in preparation for the traditional flood of patients during the Chinese New Year holidays.


More than 130 GPs in the vicinity are part of this scheme. A referral from them is worth a $50 discount off the $100 emergency department fee.


Dr Muhammad Iqmal Abdullah, whose clinic at Bedok Central sees a fair number of factory workers, said companies tend to send their workers straight to CGH following an industrial accident.

Note that discount is only for registration only. Cost of treatment not included.

A referral only delays the time for patients to receive treatment at the hospital.

And some of those patients are workers who suffered an industrial accident. All I can say is... well done. I think the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Manpower can fight each other now.

You got a hand cut. Most GPs don't even bother to dress or even stitch. You got a referal letter. You pay the GP. You go to hospital and you pay again.

Do you think this is reasonable and sensible?

You suspect you have an appendix. You go straight to hospital and have all your investigations done.

You suspect an appendix. The GP suspect an appendix. The GP still sends you to hospital. Nowadays, GPs also practise defensive medicine.They are not taking the risk . Even simple cases are sent to hospital just in case the patients have some fatal illnesses.

You think this scheme will work? I have my doubts. If i am very sick, i go straight to hospital.Why waste time at the GP clinic and then waste time at the hospital.The queue and waiting time can kill!!! Even if you are admitted, there is no guarantee of a bed space!
