The problem is that in Singapore you have little to no say! It is also true that staying late occasionally is expected and is part of the employment contract here. However, it doesn't mean you can't request stuff to ease the suffering of staying back late. I have to stay back last week for an emergency work. Boss came around and asked nicely if I can stay, I said sure, provid you give me a nice meal and a cab home. Meal cost $17, nice grilled half chicken, cab ride home was $168, prestige cab, all company paid. This way, they know not to ask you until absolutely necessary. The next day I came in late and went home early as well.

This doesn't happen all the time, maybe once every 6 month, if it was everyday, I would have raised HR or looked for another job.
