SINGAPORE: Four new members have been elected into the Workers' Party's Central Executive Committee, while Chairman Sylvia Lim and Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang have been re-elected to their posts.

In a statement, the party said it held a Conference of Organisers at the party headquarters on Sunday, where 13 council members were elected into the Central Executive Committee.

The four new council members are: Frieda Chan Sio Phing, Gerald Giam, Muhammad Faisal Abdul Manap and John Yam Poh Nam.

Mr Giam is an IT consultant and a founding member of The Online Citizen, an online blog.

Ms Chan joined the Workers' Party in October 2006 and was elected as a member of the WP Youth Wing Executive Committee in 2008.

Mr Muhammad Faisal was previously a council member with the party's Youth Wing.

WP's organising secretary Yaw Shin Leong had earlier said its new executive council will also be a 'GE CEC'.

Singapore's General Election is due by February 2012.

Where got? One Malay Muslim name.

Interesting that you brought up this though, cos the 3 (excluding the Malay) are all Christians.

What's wrong with Christians?, George Yeo, Charles Chong etc..are Roman Catholics...and many in the People's Affordable Party are Christians also??:p

Nowadays, which kid will not have a western name? Some even have uncommon western name for uniqueness. By the time these kids grow up, almost every young adult in Singapore will have a western name.

Dont you feel awkward when you introduce yourselves to a European with your European names, the real European will think that you are following them and that will make them feel they are the master and you are their follower!

This is how Harry felt when he dropped his Western names,it is a matter of pride and national identity,my fellows countrymen!

Be yourselves and be confident of your identity!

Then, speak Chinese or Malay when you introduce yourselves to Europeans. Don't you feel awkward speaking English to English or Europeans. By the way, there're many European languages beside English. Anthony is an English name, Antonio is an Italian name; John is an English name, Johan is a Dutch name. Some have regional origins, some have biblical origins.

Koreans and Vietnamese have their names given in Chinese characters, then translitered to Hangul and Alphabet. Japanese have their names given in Chinese characters as they are, but rendered with Japanese pronunciation. Should they be feeling in anyway inferior or awkward? Malay names by the way, are given as Arab names, than transliterated to Alphabet; Indonesian names are the native Bahasa names. To each is own.

I just dont understand lately there were so much xenophobia feeling about FTs invading Singapore,on the other hand I think it is good that Singkees do have the sense of nationalistic feeling and sense of belonging.

But why can't we mould out our own identity,we dont need to be a followers/slaves to stay hips or put it simply to justify whatever means (going back to history)to adopt a Western names!

If we can geniously think of sophisticated names even Westerners are at a lost, why can't we think of names like Tan Si Min,Tan Wee Zak etc,If you try to pronounce in a slang way,it really sounds good!

Be yourselves and be confident of your own identity,my fellow coumtrymen
