Melvin instinct about people are usually spot on. He was right about KJ long long before anyone even saw it.

You see, TJS may only turn out to be good for one or two opposition parties, but not the whole opposition. Maybe not for the only opposition that has won seats away from the PAP. Would that be doing any service to this opposition?

I have to credit Melvin for being honest about why there are some oppositionists who will not vote for TJS. That is, their desire to safeguard their own parties' political interests, fortunes and future. And their fear that their party will be "outshone" or worse, "eclipsed" by a TJS Presidency which Melvin thinks, may be good for "one or two opposition parties" but "not for the only opposition that has won seats away from the PAP".

Yaw Shin Leong made the same error in voting PAP even whilst he was standing on an opposition ticket.

This beggar-thy-opposition neighbour consideration is unfortunately a narrow, short-term, tactical calculation which does Singapore and Singaporeans no favours in the long term and in the larger scheme of things.

It's best not to see this PE within the scope of one's own party's interest or to adopt a short-term tactical view for short-term, inconsequential gains for one's own party.

It's best for this PE to be considered from a wider perspective and for the strategic opportunities that has been offered to us on a golden platter. It would be wiser to hold a long-term view and adopt a broad-minded, strategic position for this PE.

This is not a zero sum game between opposition parties. A rising opposition tide lifts each and every and all opposition boats.

This is what I posted earlier in the "Why Tan Jee Say Must Be Handed A Strategic Victory" thread.

"We should look at a time frame beyond the tenure of a TJS' or TCB's (assuming if either wins) 6-year Presidency. What is the value of a TCB's Presidency to the cause of the opposition in the next 5, 10 to 15 years? And what is the value of a TJS' Presidency to the cause of the opposition in that same 5, 10 to 15 years?

I've chosen this 15 year time frame as I believe a TJS' Presidency will, as kingrant describes it, result in that important crossing of the Rubicon.

The opportunities and momentous changes which a TJS Presidency will unleash can and will, if managed carefully and strategically, culminate in a Government formed by a coalition of opposition parties. A Government formed by a coalition of opposition parties will cement forever, a permanent two major-party system in Singapore. I believe this is achievable in 15 years with a TJS Presidency.

You and I and everyone else know the reality. And that reality is that there is no way a single opposition, WP, RP, NSP, SDP, PP, etc can achieve this on their own.

It's better to set aside the personal, political, ideological differences, petty envies, silly quarrels and inconsequential one-upmanship amongst the various opposition parties and build on what they have in common, i.e their opposition to the PAP. Let us all not lose sight of and let us all focus on the long term-objective and consider how the first step to that long term objective can be achieved as soon as tomorrow.

If we don't seize this golden opportunity tomorrow, it will be gone forever. The PE in its current form, will not remain after this PE."

I totally agree with you on this. PAP will find ways and means to change the rules in the next PE to prevent former or recent ex-opposition from entering the PE race and make the President a PAP puppet.

PE: Tan Kin Lian to propose S$1,500 NS pay, if elected

SINGAPORE: Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian on Thursday shared that if he were elected into office, he will propose a salary of about S$1,500 per month for men undergoing national service.

This can be in the form of cash and CPF contribution.

Full-time national servicemen currently receive between S$420 and S$1,270, depending on the rank and vocation.

Mr Tan had previously called for national servicemen to be compensated more fairly for national service.

He had suggested that they should receive an allowance similar to that of a regular soldier of the Singapore Armed Forces.

Mr Tan also said that if elected, he will propose a pension of between S$500 and S$700 per month for Singaporeans once they reach 75 or 80 years old.

He said that such senior citizens usually do not have much money left in their bank accounts.

Mr Tan was speaking to reporters at a media conference at the Central Business District.

PE: Tan Jee Say being granted eligibility cert was Tan Kin Lian's low point

SINGAPORE - Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian, asked about his high and low points in his campaign so far, said there were two low points - and both involved fellow candidate Tan Jee Say.

Said former NTUC Income CEO Tan: "The first low point was when Tan Jee Say applied for the Certificate of Eligibility, after I invited him to be part of my think tank", referring to his strategic team behind his presidential bid.

Mr Tan Kin Lian, speaking at a media conference at his campaign headquarters on Thursday afternoon, said that Mr Tan Jee Say had turned up for one meeting and added that "there was a disruption" after the former Singapore Democratic Party's General Election candidate decided to proceed with his own presidential campaign.

Mr Tan Kin Lian added that he thought he lost the support of much of the online media as a result.

He said his second low was when Mr Tan Jee Say was granted the Certificate of Eligibility to run for election. Said Mr Tan Kin Lian: "The criteria is you need a person who has run a company with S$100 million in capital. To my common sense, Tan Jee Say does not qualify."

His high points, he added, were seeing "many people come forward to help and volunteering their time" after he had announced his candidacy, as well as when he and his campaign team decided on his slogan, "Voice of the People".

A third high point was when his daughter, Ms Tan Su Ling, made a speech at his rally on Wednesday night.

Mr Tan Kin Lian also shared that if he were elected into office, he will propose a salary of about S$1,500 per month for men undergoing national service.

If want to propose these Santa Claus type of proposal, at least state where and how to get these money to pay. If not, just shut the fuck up or risk being called an idiot.
