SINGAPORE - Singapore's total employment grew by an estimated 134,900 last year, up from the 129,100 in 2012, according to preliminary figures released by the Manpower Ministry on Wednesday.

More locals found jobs, while curbs on foreign manpower continued to moderate the growth of the foreign workforce.

Local employment growth during the year was 81,600, up from 58,700 in 2012. Growth in employment of foreigners slowed to 53,300 from 70,400 in 2012.

Unemployment rates

The report noted that in December, locals made up 66.2 per cent of persons employed here, with foreigners (excluding foreign domestic workers) accounting for 33.8 per cent.

Quarterly figures show that unemployment rates in December were unchanged from the previous quarter, at 1.8 per cent overall and 2.8 per cent for citizens. However, the resident unemployment rate went up slightly, from 2.6 per cent in September to 2.7 per cent in December. The number of laid off workers also increased slightly, from 11,010 in 2012 to 11,400 in 2013.

What is a foreign domestic worker? Why exclude them? Are they not foreigners? That's why the truth is that 40 percent of the workforce consists of foreigners.

It is obvious that a reduction of the foreign workforce to 10 percent will boost pay and jobs for sinkees.

don't believe their carp figures. When there is no access to freedom of information don't believe dodgy PAP figures, they are cheats.

Heard from a friend in an MNC bank that his local Chinese colleague, with family and children, got sacked right before CNY. No bonus.

Sad case, that's why there is no job security nowadays except in the crappy civil service. More competition from foreigners = No job security = Less people can afford kids.

Only an ang moh or ah neh would be evil enough to fire a Chinese worker right before CNY.

All these banks all cutting costs and in the first place all are hiring mostly foreigners, why Singapore let them all in? RBS, DB, UBS, CS, JPM, Barcap... the list is endless.

Banks are soulless working environments. I've heard horror stories that an employee may be happily going for lunch at 12pm, but at 4pm on the same day he will be retrenched, asked to pack his belongings and then be escorted out of the building by a security guard.

ah it's worse than that. Usually, they will just ask you in for a meeting on an ordinary workday, then they will say you are fired, you are escorted straight out of office. Your personal belongings at your desk either you come back on a weekend to collect it or they will mail to you (can only take your handbag or briefcase, if any).

Reason for this is they don't want others to see you packing up your things in the office; supposedly bad for morale.
