Women who drink and smoke are easier targets of sexual assaults, according to a judge in Beijing, state media reports.
Guo Zhao, a judge at Haidian district court, reached the conclusion after studying the motives of 162 rapists in 151 cases since 2013, according to the Beijing Evening News.
He said 60 per cent of the rapes took place between 9pm and 3am, during which time the victims – some of whom were “sexually liberated” – were caught off-guard while flirting with strangers.
Provocative clothing also increased the risk of sexual assault, according to the judge. He added that most of the rapes were perpetrated by people known to the victims, including friends they met online.
Guo said two-thirds of the defendants were aged between 18 and 30, and most were migrant workers, either single or living away from their wives, which meant their desires were suppressed.
Haidan court has heard fewer rape cases in recent years: 67 in 2013, 49 last year and 35 so far this year, the report said.
