Marina Bay Sands (MBS) casino is refusing to pay a woman her jackpot winnings of more than $410,000.

Mdm Zhu Yun Ping (50, hawker) had visited the casino with some foreign friends and her store helpers at about 5am on this Tuesday, 18 October.

She described what happened to reporters, "I was playing on this jackpot machine until 6am and my stored value card had already accumulated about $800 in winnings. Suddenly, I struck the Bonus Cash jackpot of $416,742.11."

At the time, Mdm Zhu was confused with what happened until a bystander explained to her that she had struck a jackpot prize. Many other casino patrons also came up to her to congratulate her on the win.

She continued, "Soon after, the manager of the casino came up to me and told me that the jackpot machine had malfunctioned. The manager explained to me that the machine's top prize is a car, and that its highest cash payout is only $50,000, so I could not have struck that Bonus Cash prize.

The manager also explained that I could get $258,962 if I decide to sell the car back to the dealer." Mdm Zhu refused to settle with the manager's explanation and insisted that she was entitled to her win, which the jackpot machine clearly displayed.

At that time, a casino patron had also stepped forward to help her by taking a photo of the displayed cash prize as evidence. The man was however, stopped by casino staff who warned him that photo-taking is not allowed in the casino.

The staff then asked the man to hand over his phone and indicated that they will be deleting the photo. The man was then escorted out of the casino. Mdm Zhu has lodged a complaint with the Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore, which is currently investigating the case.

The police have also explained to her the forms of legal action she can take.

Singaporean hawker in casino dispute over jackpot

SINGAPORE : A Singaporean food seller claims a casino is trying to deprive her of her rightful winnings after it said a slot machine jackpot message only popped up because of a glitch, a report said Friday.

Choo Hong Eng, 58, told a local newspaper she was playing the slot machines for the first time Tuesday when the "Cash Bonus" sign appeared indicating she had won more than S$416,000.

She said the manager told her instead of the full jackpot she had won S$50,000 and a sports car worth S$258,962 which she could sell back to the casino for cash.

A spokesman for the Marina Bay Sands casino said: "As this case is the subject of an ongoing investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."

Choo, who runs a vegetarian food stall, said as well as complaining to the casino she had also made a police report.

"It's a matter of principle. I wouldn't take a single cent more from them, but I wouldn't accept a single cent less either," she told the newspaper, adding that she had not been told when the casino investigation would be completed.

"The other patrons told me not to be taken in. They said there was no indication anywhere that I had won only S$50,000 and a car."

It was the first time Ms Choo Hong Eng was playing the slot machines at the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) casino on Tuesday, and another casino patron had to show her the ropes.

But less than half an hour and $50 later, the machine seemed to get stuck.

When she turned to her kind fellow gamer for help again, he stared with disbelief at the numbers flickering on her screen: '$416,742.11' and above it 'Cash Bonus'.

BACKGROUND STORY

On her side, Ms Choo has casino patrons who were there with her at 6am, offering to be her witnesses. One of them, Mr Moo Ngow Chai, a 63-year-old Malaysian, said in Mandarin in a telephone interview yesterday: 'I saw what happened and thought it was very unfair of the casino to deny her the winnings. 'The jackpot machine clearly displayed the words 'Cash Bonus'. There were no pictures of a car at all.'

This is a common casino tactic.......... I have oso heard from a croupier friend that his casino in Las Vegas do NOT payout the full amount to locals who play the slot machines....... they will only honour the full payout if the winner is a member or a foreign tourist. My friend says this is SOP in casinos in the States and Oz land.

Jackpot winner's lawyer sends letter to MBS
By Zhao Quan Yin | Posted: 26 October 2011 2215 hrs

SINGAPORE: The lawyer representing a woman embroiled in a dispute concerning a jackpot win has sent a letter to Marina Bay Sands (MBS).

The lawyer said the letter claims that the casino at MBS has not paid 58-year-old Choo Hong Eng her jackpot win of some S$416,000.

She was told that the slot machine had a glitch and that she had instead won S$50,000 and a sports car worth nearly S$260,000 which she could sell back to the casino for cash.

The lawyer sent the letter on Monday, asking the casino to pay the amount Madam Choo claimed she had won.

The letter also asked MBS to respond by Tuesday midnight.

Since then, Madam Choo and her lawyer have not received any response.

They are awaiting the Casino Regulatory Authority's report, due to be out next month, which will indicate if Madam Choo will be paid.

If not, her lawyer said Madam Choo, a vegetarian food stall owner, plans to sue MBS.

Woman in MBS jackpot dispute files statement with CRA
By Seet Sook Hwee | Posted: 01 November 2011 2204 hrs

SINGAPORE: Hawker Choo Hong Eng said she gave her first statement to the Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA) on Tuesday, in her dispute with Marina Bay Sands (MBS) over her jackpot winnings.

58-year-old Madam Choo said she felt confident about her chances of winning the case, especially with the support of CCTV footage and at least four witnesses not related to her.

Madam Choo had won S$416,000 on a jackpot machine at MBS last month, but the casino said the machine had malfunctioned. It offered her a sports car worth S$258,962 and S$50,000 in cash instead. But Madam Choo refused the offer.

Her lawyer, Mr Choo Si Sen, said the casino must pay the full amount of S$416,000 within 15 days if the CRA's verdict is in her favour.

If either party is dissatisfied with the verdict, they can appeal to the Patron Dispute Committee.

Mdm Choo said: "The CRA officer asked me: 'Did you see the words CASH and CAR appear on the screen?' I said the only words were CASH BONUS. The word CAR didn't come up at all. Car is spelt C-A-R, and cash is C-A-S-H. The difference between four and three letters is obvious."

Hawker in dispute with MBS gets full jackpot winnings
By Hoe Yeen Nie | Posted: 09 November 2011 1743 hrs

SINGAPORE: A dispute over jackpot winnings between a hawker and the Marina Bay Sands casino has been settled.

58-year-old Choo Hong Eng told Channel NewsAsia the casino has agreed to pay the entire sum of S$416,000. The casino earlier said that the machine had suffered a glitch.

In the weeks since her case came to light, Madam Choo has become a minor celebrity.

She said: "When they (members of the public) see me, they'll ask, is there a resolution? I tell them, not to worry, it'll come eventually. They ask, 'will you get the money'? I say, of course!"

Madam Choo's lucky strike took place at Marina Bay Sands on October 18.

But the casino said the machine was faulty, and offered in exchange, S$50,000 in cash and a sports car worth S$258,962 which she could sell back to the casino for cash.

Madam Choo refused the offer, and hired a lawyer to fight her case.

With CCTV footage and eye-witnesses to back her claim, she gave her statement at the Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA) on November 1.

Three days later, on November 4, the casino agreed to pay.

Madam Choo, who was in Taiwan at the time, was informed by her lawyer.

She signed the acceptance letter on returning to Singapore on Wednesday, and expects to get the cheque three days after the casino receives her letter.

She said she is happy the case is settled, and will donate nearly half of her winnings to charity.

"It's a matter of principle. I got the money by accident, so I should give back to society, help the needy with their medical expenses, and help the elderly," said Madam Choo.

In a statement, Marina Bay Sands said it "regrets any confusion", and has decided to pay the amount displayed on the slot machine, after carefully reviewing the matter.

The hawker involved in a dispute with the Marina Bay Sands over her casino winnings has gotten the cheque for the money.

On Friday, the casino delivered the cheque for $416,742.11 to Ms Choo Hong Eng's lawyer at Straits Law corporation.

Ms Choo had struck the amount playing jackpot on Oct 18, but was told by a casino manager that the machine had a glitch. She was offered $50,000 and a car worth $258,962 instead.

She declined and complained to the casino regulatory authority. On Nov 4, MBS decided to pay her the full amount.
