A Chinese woman tried to take a 9cm fruit knife on board a flight at the Kunming Changshui International Airport by putting it in her hair and telling security screeners it was an accessory, provincial television reported.

Chen Zhijun, a security worker, was quoted as saying the passenger was a visitor from Nanning in Guangxi and was travelling to Yunnan during the National Day holiday.

“She bought some fruits when travelling in Yunnan and worried that the waiting time to board would be long. So she wanted to bring a fruit knife to cut up her food as a snack,” Chen said.

Security staff didn’t agree with her declaration the knife was for keeping up her hair and took it off her.

Airport security staff regularly confiscate a wide array of items from travellers that obviously wouldn’t be allowed onto a flight, including large quantities of alcohol, and this past July, a lighter shaped like a grenade. It later exploded, injuring a staff member’s hand.

That same weekend, a man caused havoc aboard a Shenzhen Airlines flight when he used a lighter he did manage to get past security to start two fires, damaging a seat and part of a door. He was arrested when the plane landed in Guangzhou in Guangdong province.
