WOMAN SMUGGLED 21.48G OF HEROIN IN CAR

Malaysian couple Mas Swan Adnan, 27, and Roshamima Roslan, 24, drove into Singapore through Woodlands at night on May 6, 2009, with 21.48g of heroin in their car.

Mas Swan Adnan was acquitted by the High Court as evidence showed that he believed his girlfriend when she told him that the bundles contained Ecstasy pills.

Roshamima Roslan was sent to the gallows for trafficking in 15g or more of heroin.

A MALAYSIAN couple who were due to get married drove into Singapore two years ago with 21.48g of heroin bundles in their car.

The pair were caught, charged and put on trial.

On Friday, the High Court acquitted Mas Swan Adnan, 27, but sent his fiancee Roshamima Roslan, 24, to the gallows for trafficking in 15g or more of the drug.

In his judgment on Friday, Justice Steven Chong said the prosecution had to prove that the two of them knew exactly what sort of drugs they were bringing into Singapore.

Justice Chong said the evidence showed, however, that Mas Swan believed his girlfriend when she told him that the bundles contained Ecstasy pills.

Roshamima's claim was not believable, the judge said, adding that the prosecution proved that she knew that illicit drugs were hidden in their car when they entered Singapore.

Roshamima Roslan, 25, may have believed she was smuggling Ecstasy, not heroin, said the court.

A Malaysian woman who escaped the gallows after her conviction for drug trafficking was overturned on appeal, was jailed for 18 years on Thursday.

In sentencing Roshamima Roslan, 25, the Court of Appeal said that she was more culpable than her accomplice-boyfriend, and hence, she should be punished more severely.

Roshamima and her fiance Mas Swan Adnan, 28, had driven into Singapore via the Woodlands Checkpoint on the night of May 6, 2009.

Three bundles wrapped in tape were found in the car's front left door panel by the authorities.

The bundles contained 21.48g of heroin; the death penalty is mandatory for anyone convicted of trafficking more than 15g of the drug.
