SINGAPORE: A 37-year-old woman was sentenced to six years' Corrective Training for criminal breach of trust, theft and cheating offences involving S$101,840.
Corrective Training is more serious than just a jail term as offenders are unlikely to be given early release for factors such as good behaviour.
Chia Weven, who's unemployed, committed the offences between late 2008 and June this year.
She had managed to convince her victims to invest in a computer and mobile phone business before making off with their money.
Among her victims was 42-year-old Chan Hong Pow.
Chia presented him her business proposal in February last year. She lied to him, claiming that she could obtain an iPhone for S$280.
Mr Chan was very interested in the offer as the phone would cost about S$1,000 each at the time.
They met again on March 31 2009 at Realty Park in Hougang and he agreed to buy S$98,000 worth of mobile phones. Mr Chan then gave her a cash deposit of S$20,700 dollars to confirm the order.
He then waited for the phones but the goods never arrived.
For cheating, Chia could have been jailed up to ten years and fined for each charge.
She pleaded guilty on November 19 to 12 cheating charges involving S$51,400. Her remaining 56 other charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
