Woman jailed 16 months for abusing maid

A woman who was convicted of three counts of abusing her Indonesian maid over a two-month period was jailed for 16 months on Friday.

Housewife Soh Meiyun, 32, was found guilty after a seven-day trial of using a hot metal spoon to burn the left arm of Ms Lilis Sriyatun, 26, using a bamboo pole to hit her head, back and thighs and using a sewing needle to poke and scratch her on her hands and body.

The attacks took place at her Compassvale Link flat between April and May 2009.

Soh is appealing against her sentence.

Major Chinese dailies reported that a woman from Singapore had been jailed for abusing her maid, including poking and scratching her naked body for not being able to clean the washing machine in three minutes.

The Indonesian maid ran away and sought help after she could not endure the abuse of 32-year-old housewife Soh Mei Yun anymore.

Soh was said to have, among other forms of abuse, used a hot metal spoon to burn her maid's left arm, hit her head, back and thighs with a bamboo pole as well as poked and scratched her hands and various parts of her body with a sewing needle.

She was convicted of three counts of abusing her maid over a two-month period and was sentenced to 16 months' jail on Friday.
