Woman fined for stealing sister's jewellery, watch
SINGAPORE: A woman has been fined S$15,000 for stealing from her elder sister.
Damaris Fe Jenny Sim admitted to stealing her sister's Rolex watch and some gold jewellery.
The theft took place between late September and October 2011.
The 46-year-old took the opportunity to stay over at her sister Doreen Sim's residence when the elder sibling was on holiday in the United States.
When Ms Sim returned, she found her items missing and confronted the Indonesian domestic helper.
It was then revealed that the accused had invited herself over and stayed a few nights at the residence.
The court heard that Sim pawned the watch and gold jewellery for some S$15,300.
The proceeds were used to pay her losses incurred from investing in shares.
In mitigation, the defence lawyer Shazana Anuar said full restitution has been made.
She added that the accused's sister also pleaded for leniency in a letter to the district judge.
The court heard that Sim has a history of mental illness.
But the prosecutor Kenneth Chin said this was a case where trust was abused.
District judge Toh Yung Cheong said the victim's plea on the accused's behalf reduced the impact of the offence.
He ordered Sim to pay S$3,000 first and the remaining amount to be paid in two instalments. - CNA/xq
