Woman fined, banned over fatal traffic accident
By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent
A WOMAN motorist was fined a total of $8,000 on Friday for causing the death of a motorcyclist and injuring the pillion rider in a road traffic accident.
Leong Yuet Kiew, 32, a programme account manager, was also banned from driving all vehicles for three years.
A district court heard that she was driving along Jalan Bahar on Oct 7, 2009 when she encroached into the path of full-time national serviceman Brian Nicholas Fernando, 20, and the pillion rider while making a right turn into Old Choa Chu Kang Road.
This resulted in a head to side collision. Mr Fernando - together with pillion rider Kelvin Neo Bing Wei, 20 - was taken to hospital where he died more than an hour later. Mr Neo suffered a fractured left wrist and nose.
She could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death; and jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000 for causing grievous hurt.
