A woman in Shenzhen in southern China is in a critical condition after contracting bird flu, state media reported.
The 26-year-old has caught the H5N6 strain of the virus, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
She is receiving treatment in hospital, the provincial health authorities were quoted as saying.
Experts believe the infection is an isolated case and there is little possibility in the near future of the virus spreading, according to the report.
The world’s first human H5N6 infection was reported in May last year in southwest China’s Sichuan province, the report said. Four cases have been reported so far around the world.
