Woman charged $700 for taxi ride

A woman recently discovered that she was charged more than $700 for a taxi ride.

Mdm Lin (53, cashier) called Shin Min Daily News after she discovered a receipt in her purse that stated a charge of $710.30 for a taxi ride. Lin had taken a taxi last Saturday at about 4pm to Sentosa from her home in Pasir Ris. She did not have enough cash with her at the time to pay for the $16.80 fare and decided to pay with the NETS service.

The driver managed to get his NETS machine to work on his second try and Lin keyed in her PIN number without checking the amount stated. In a hurry to get to work, Lin also did not check the receipt she was given before stuffing it into her purse. Two days later, she discovered the receipt and was shocked by the amount stated.

Lin immediately checked her bank account and found that $710.30 had indeed been deducted. She called the taxi company about it but did not receive a reply until she lodged a complaint with the police and Land Transport Authority (LTA).

When she heard back from the taxi company, it told her that it did not receive a receipt for a payment of $700. The company even callously remarked that payments of $700 are commonplace.

Lin said, "After I feedback to LTA about this, the company called me again and said that the taxi driver concerned has refunded the sum. They asked me to withdraw my complaint and asked for my bank account number so they can return the sum to me".

Lin refuses to withdraw her complaint as she is unhappy with how the company handled the case. She also felt that the company had been biased towards the cabby. She now leaves LTA to follow through with the matter and urges the public to be more cautious when making electronic payments.

do u think the driver is a keling?

this is a screw up in the nets system, it has happened to me before when i was with smrt. fuck up company, smrt!

Gov slowly take the money of citizens through Giro you all didnt complain.....

taxi drivers are the most lowly category kind of job in spore. any thing sure kanna complain tua kee and broadcasted in the mainstream media. we also have our own fuck up and mean passengers. just yesterday nite, i picked up one corporate person from the airport. upon reaching his destination at bedok reservoir, he handed me 2 pieces of 100 thai baht which resemble like our ten dollars. then i just turn to him and say the currency not correct. he then said oh...and took out a fifty dollar change and say round it off to $18 as the fare was $17+. looking at his eyes with the light on in my taxi, i know he is trying to pull a fast one but i found out in time. this kind of tactic is one of those crafty techniques used in business dealings. argh...ptui!

last time also got one mynah used the same trick, at nite from airport, trying to pass a $2 dollar note as $10 note. the way she trying to fake it, i already know.ha!

Is that why so many of them want to cheat?

certainly, there black sheeps, not all. I always pick up old pple and handicap. if i took the wrong route, i will give discount. when biz is bad, you can be sure that there will be more cheats, same goes for the passengers.

my most interesting passengers are those uncles i picked up from geylang, you talk to them, they tell you lots of stories going around. the worst and snobbish passengers are those indian expats and those ladies working in CBD. just recently, i picked up one uncle, he claimed to be lao goh's ex-classmate from RI. sometimes, it's interesting if you chat up pple and they tell you their stories. i know some uncles who gave up their flats here and went phuket and batam to stay. they call spore a shit place.

It's an honest mistake lah. If you pick up 2000 passengers a month, and one or two cases of mistaken notes, it's just a miniscule 0.1%. I too have given double amount for payment at times - it's nice to see honest shop-keepers returning the extras.

Anyway most of the time taxi-drivers provide quite good service - I always ask them to keep the change. Remember President Tony Tan asking the taxi-driver to keep the change after returning from a walkabout? Distractors of course will say he is trying to buy votes. He is sympathetic towards taxi drivers who want to drive till age 75.

please lah, have been driving for the past 5 years, what kind of pple i cannot see meh. besides,

1. light in my cab was on when i reached his place.

2. if he give me one piece wrong currency, i will think that's an honest mistake. but 2 pieces and not the plastic ones like our ten dollar legal tender.

3. his look is those dishonest and oppressed type, like kanna cheated a lot of times by others.

4. as for the mynah, she was chatting with me along the journey and her bf was keeping quiet all the while. knn, pretending to be nice when she is not.
