Woman blackmailer’s jail term affirmed

A former pub manager has failed in her bid to appeal against a seven-year jail sentence for blackmailing her former lover.
Ki Chun-yim was found guilty in 2011 of nine counts of blackmailing a wealthy businessman, who was identified as Mr X in court.
The 40-year-old had also been convicted of a charge of committing an act to pervert the course of justice.
The Court of Appeal earlier heard that after Mr X ended his brief relationship with the defendant in 2007, she continued to demand money from him even after she had already been offered up to HK$10 million.
Ms Ki threatened to kill Mr X's wife, daughter, business partners as well as their family members if he failed to pay. She also warned Mr X not to give statements to the police and hired private detectives to track him.
Ms Ki stressed during the appeal application that she had a reasonable expectation that Mr X would compensate her after the break-up, and that the court had not taken into account the psychological impact she suffered as a result of the separation.
But her application was rejected, as the two Court of Appeal judges ruled that Ms Ki's acts had well-exceeded reasonable expectations.
They agreed her behaviour had posed vivid and real risks on the lives of Mr X, his family, and his business associates.—RTHK
