SINGAPORE: A woman who is suspected of being behind at least three cheating cases in Sengkang and Hougang has been arrested.
Police say the 34-year-old suspect would allegedly solicit money from her victims on the pretext that her son or mother was hospitalised and needed money urgently.
The victims would then hand over between S$20 and S$40 as loans to the suspect, who promised to repay them the following day.
After collecting the money, the suspect allegedly turned elusive and became uncontactable.
Police managed to establish the identity of the suspect through extensive follow-up investigations and ground enquiries.
She was called up for questioning and arrested at the Ang Mo Kio Police Division on Wednesday at 6.20pm.
The woman will be charged in court on Thursday.
If convicted of cheating, she could be jailed up to 10 years and fined.
Police urged the public to be wary of such cheating ruses and not give away their valuables or money easily to strangers.
