AN 84-YEAR-OLD woman who was warned by police to ensure the four shophouse units in Geylang she owns are not used for illegal activities is in trouble again. After finding illegal jackpot machines and improvised computers used for online casino gaming in the units between December last year and April this year, the police advised her 'sternly' to ensure that no illegal activities take place on the premises. The gaming operators were charged in court under the Common Gaming House Act and all were convicted. But when the police made subsequent checks on the units in June and July this year, they found illegal gaming activities happening there. The woman was arrested and is out on bail.
Those convicted of managing a place being used as a common gaming house can be fined up to $50,000 and jailed up to three years. The players can be sent to prison for six months and fined up to $5,000. In a separate case, 10 people were arrested late on Monday at an illegal gambling den operating in a condominium in Dunman Road. Police said preliminary investigations showed that one of the men arrested had rented a unit for gambling. The 10 - eight men and two women aged 19 to 29 - were arrested in a four-hour operation by officers from Bedok Police Division. Chips, $800 in cash and cards used for the card game Texas Poker were also seized. Investigations are continuing.
