Pro- BN Poster playing on religious fears

Sabah , Sarawak churches hit back at anti-Christian campaign

Stung by the incendiary anti-Christian campaign in the run-up to polling day, bumiputera churches in Sabah and Sarawak are hitting back with unprecedented vigour.

A "pastoral communiqué" on the 'Allah' issue has been hammered out to be circulated on Friday, just two days before polling to all city and interior churches.

The move is unprecedented in its unusually hard hitting language uncharacteristic of bumiputera pastors and church leaders who have traditionally maintained a cordial relationship with the government.

"We, the native Christians of Sabah and Sarawak have kept silent for a considerable length of time. Some have taken our silence to mean something else. Therefore, the time has now come for us to speak," the communiqué said in its opening line.

"Surely the way forward is no longer found in the status quo which expects the bumiputera Church in Sabah and Sarawak to remain silent," it added.

A Johor candidate’s Singapore story

A Johor candidate’s Singapore story

A close-up of the old photograph showing Barisan Nasional candidate Tengku Putra Haron Jumat's father Abdul Hamid Jumat (right), who was the deputy chief minister of Singapore in the 1950s, with former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

By Zakir Hussain In Johor Baru

IN HIS family home overlooking the Straits of Johor, a Barisan Nasional candidate for a state assembly seat proudly holds up a photograph of his father and Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

The frame holding it broke recently, and a hook remains on the wall where it once was.

But Tengku Putra Haron Jumat, 49, says he plans to get it reframed and put on display in good time.

The first-time candidate for the Kempas state seat, in Pulai, is the youngest son of Mr Abdul Hamid Jumat, Singapore’s first Malay minister and deputy chief minister from 1955 to 1959.

“My dad used to make me watch Singapore TV when Mr Lee spoke so I could learn from his manner of delivery,” Mr Haron tells The Straits Times.

“It’s ironic, because they were from opposing parties. But my dad was a gentleman, and it didn’t matter if you were from the opposition,” he adds.

“Lee Kuan Yew is one of my two political idols – the other is Dr Mahathir (Mohamad),” he says. “They have their own style, grit their teeth, took things by the collar, and their two countries are where they are today because of these two gentlemen.”

“It’s an irony they were at odds with each other, but it’s also good when you’re competing,” he adds.

What does he respect most about them?

“They were authoritative,” he says. “It’s like how someone slaps you in the face, and you say: Thank you. I needed that.”

Mr Hamid was the first chairman of Umno Singapore and was elected assemblyman for Ulu Bedok in the 1955 election, after which Mr David Marshall became Singapore’s first chief minister.

An old boy of Raffles Institution, Mr Hamid also served as minister for local government, lands and housing.

He was re-elected assemblyman for Geylang Serai in 1959, and sat on the opposition benches after the People’s Action Party led by Mr Lee swept 43 of the 51 seats that year.

Ironically, Mr Haron says, he never knew his father as a politician but as a diplomat.

Not long after he was born at Gleneagles Hospital in 1963, the youngest of seven children, his father was appointed Malaysia’s ambassador to Germany and took his family with him.

Singapore had joined Malaysia together with Sabah and Sarawak on Sept 16, 1963. But the merger was short-lived and after Separation in 1965, Mr Hamid, like a number of Malays in Singapore who held senior government positions, moved across the Causeway.

But some of his siblings remained in Singapore, and Mr Haron, like many Johoreans, has family in Singapore. One of his cousins is well-known Islamic religious leader Ustaz T.M. Fouzy Jumat.

After several postings abroad, including to the Philippines, Egypt and the Netherlands, Mr Hamid returned to Malaysia in 1973. He died in 1978, when Mr Haron was 15.

Mr Haron went on to study at Arkansas State University, where he was president of the Malaysian Students’ Association, and joined his family’s stockbroking firm after graduation.

Not long after he returned, he filled out a form to be an Umno member in Seputeh, Kuala Lumpur, but was annoyed when he found out his form had been “lost”.

A friend who ventured the “loss” may have been intentional, given his family name, advised him to apply near his hometown instead. And so Mr Haron joined the party branch in Pulai, which is next to Johor Baru constituency, rising to become youth chief in 1993.

The MP was long-time Information Minister Mohamed Rahmat, who is, incidentally, father of the incumbent MP for Pulai, Mr Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

“I’m excited,” Mr Haron says of his maiden election as a candidate.

“I also believe we don’t have to go far to look for things we can do to improve our city and its infrastructure,” he adds, referring to how Singapore can be a model for urban governance.

His peers can also learn from Singapore on matters like how mosques are run, he says, recalling a visit hosted by the PAP Youth Wing three years ago.

“At this point in time, we have the best relations with Singapore economically and politically.”

Several thousand of his voters, he notes, work or live in Singapore.

So which way will they vote? “They’ll lean the Singapore way,” he says with a chuckle. And what is that?

“They’ve got investments here. Naturally they want them to be protected,” he adds.

The father of two boys and a girl also lets on that he asks his 15-year-old twin sons to watch DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang speak.

It’s good to know the competition, he quips.

Pairin, Dompok, Liew, Kurup facing defeats

KOTA KINABALU: At least four Sabah Barisan Nasional coalition presidents are staring at defeat on polling day on May 5.
With polling to take place in Sunday, political observers as well as party insiders are in agreement that the four face an uphill task to repeat their feat in the last 2008 general election, let alone to win.
The embattled four are Joseph Pairin Kitingan of Parti Bersatu Sabah, Bernard Dompok of UPKO, VK Liew of LDP and Joseph Kurup of PBRS.
Pairin who is standing in two seats – Keningau parliamentary and Tambunan state seats is, according to his followers very likely to lose Keningau to his younger brother, maverick politician Jeffrey who is helming State Reform Party (STAR).
They also believe that Pairin will lose Tambunan too.
“For the first time in almost 40 years of public office, the Huguan Siou (paramount chief) is in real danger of being defeated in an election, only miracle will stop it from happening,” admitted one of his close campaigners in Tambunan.
He is facing Jeffrey in Keningau in a three-cornered fight with a PKR candidate, Stephen Sandor, who according to many, could be deciding the majority votes for the seat.
In Tambunan, Pairin, 73, faces a strong challenge from Jeffrey’s boy, Nestor Joannes, who had squared off with Pairin in a previous election for the hot seat.
Three others are also in the fray – Wilfred Ponil of PKR and two Independents Justin Yonsoding and Francis Koh. Koh also stood for the seat previously.
Many here predict that the PKR candidate and the Independent duo are staring at a possibility of losing their deposits.
Dompok, meanwhile, is embroiled in another no less interesting fight in adjacent Penampang parliamentary seat. He is facing two opposition candidates, Darrel Leiking of PKR and a former banker Melanie Annol of STAR.
Political pundits said Dompok and Leiking have been neck-to-neck since nomination day. It would be a straight fight between Leiking and Dompok if not for Annol. Annol’s votes could be a a crucial factor on deciding the eventual winner.

‘Allah’ bibles seized from Sibu prison

2013-04-29-13-53-22_0193.jpg

PETALING JAYA: Hundreds of Malay and Iban-language bibles with the word ‘Allah’ have been confiscated from a prison in Sibu, revealed the Prison Fellowship Malaysia (PFM), sparking uproar among the Christian community just days before May 5 general election.
This is in spite of the Cabinet’s 2011 10-point resolution, which allows the Bumiputera Christian population in Sabah and Sarawak to bring in and use their bibles in Malay as well as in indigenous languages.
“These past two weeks, [prison authorities] kept taking away the Malay and Iban-language bible from the prisoners because they have the word Allah in it,” PFM executive director Prem Kumar told FMT.
“So now these prisoners have got nothing to read, and they really need help,” he added.
Prem said authorities began seizing the religious books after the Sibu Prison director wrote a letter to the prison headquarters in Kajang, questioning the use of “Allah” bibles by inmates.
The Kajang headquarters then replied: “…For your information, the Malaysian Prison Department through memo JP/PML/Kp/2 (58) dated July 25, 2011 titled ‘Use of Illegal Publication As Teaching Tools’ clearly mentions [guidelines on the use of books or articles containing the word Allah in Sarawak prisons].
“As such, you are required to take appropriate action over this,” reads the Feb 22 memo, which is signed by Prisoner Management Director Jamaludin Saad.
“So the [Sibu Prison] director took appropriate action and that action was to confiscate the bibles,” said Prem although he added that the English and Chinese language bibles, which do not contain the word ‘Allah’, were not seized.

Something is very wrong..... why are the authorities doing this barely a few days from the GE?
Surely they can wait until the GE to be over before making Christians angry?

DAP wants ‘Allah’ Bibles returned to prisoners

KUCHING: The issue of “Allah” and the Malay Bible is far from over. It has cropped up again when prison authorities seized hundreds of Malay and Iban-language Bibles with the word “Allah” from a prison in Sibu over the past few weeks.
This has not gone down well with the Christians who make up 44% of the state’s population.
And the Sarawak DAP has seized the opportunity to make political mileage by asking the candidates and political parties to make their stand.
Julian Tan, DAP candidate for Stampin, said that the Malay Bible has been published for more than 400 years in Sarawak. It is widely used in rural Sarawak especially among the natives.
“Why does this word ‘Allah’ suddenly become an issue?” asked Julian.
“The seizure by the authorities is an act of aggression infringing on our constitutional rights and freedom of religion as well as violating the rights of the indigenous Sarawakians who form about 44% of the state population,” he said.
“We condemn the Barisan Nasional government for this act of aggression and demand it return the copies of the Bible to the prison.
“The BN government must respect the rule of law and the Federal Constitution,” he said when commenting on the seizure of the Bibles.
The seizure was highlighted by FMT yesterday. According to the report, hundreds of Malay and Iban-language Bibles with the word “Allah” have been confiscated from a prison in Sibu in the past few weeks.
