Senior citizens lauded for cleaning their own tables after golden jubilee dinner
Published on Feb 11, 2015 8:06 AM

SINGAPORE - A group of senior citizens who attended a dinner in Simei have been lauded for cleaning up after themselves.

A netizen by the name of Tay said he was "proud" to see the elderly who attended the Changi Simei Golden Jubilee Dinner on Sunday leave their tables and the floor spotless.

Tay, who shared what he saw on citizen journalism site, Stomp wrote: "This should put the young fans at the Laneway Music Festival at Gardens By The Bay to shame."

The issue of littering has been in the spotlight recently. On Jan 28, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called out about 13,000 festival goers for not picking up their litter, and asked Singaporeans to make Singapore a clean city rather than a "cleaned" one.

A day later, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong took to Facebook to do the same. Comparing Tokyo and Singapore, he said that the Japanese capital had no rubbish bins in public places, but it is still litter free. "Without foreign workers, Singapore is likely to become a 'garbage city'," Mr Goh said in the post.

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan on Feb 1 also took litterbugs to task, saying the cleanliness of a place reflects what people think of themselves, their respect for their neighbours and their concern for the neighbourhood.

The question is was this spontaneous or was it rehearsed and done for public consumption. I have seen many oldies littering at hawker centres so how come SPH does not report this?
