Even the agreement with the Indons to supply us with water is put on cold storage - because the Indons will simply copycat Mahathir, just as they did with the sudden cut in sand and granite. We still get sand, we still get granite and we still get water. Isn't this a great feat of a great leader?

Some ignorant Sporeans are unaware we are exporting good clean water. The thousands of planes at Changi and ships at our ports are loading our desalinated and Newater onto their vessels. The thousands of hotel guests are drinking water straight from the taps if they choose to. They are paying much more than we residents pay. You pay the CEOs millions of dollars so that they can make more millions for you. You pay CEO thousands of dollars, they will make a few more thousands for you. And of course if you pay peanuts, you only get monkeys to work for you.

If we consider water as not only an economic but a vital strategic resource, then it is worthwhile to be self-sufficient. If we can be self-sufficient in sand, the Indons will be having nightmares. Why don't the Indons and M'sians threaten us with cutting of their supplies of vegetable and fruits and eggs - obvious to them we have many other alternative sources - from as far away as Europe or USA.

PM Lee, Emeritus SM Goh and Paramount Leader LKY have always said - think of the big picture, think long term. We must build confidence in our future. While we listen to the dull and the ignorant (aka Desiderata), it is wise to listen to the three wise-men.

Even if some Malaysian politicians are demonising Spore to win votes, why should it be of any concern to LKY I doubt that most Malaysians really care about Spore, they have their own "local" issues to deal with

This is correct, energy cost is a huge component of newater and desalination water. Even in Arab countries, they don't use as much energy as we do to get desalination water. They have land and large amount of hot sun. Their desalination plants is usually just huge ponds of water, spread over a lot of land, and let the sun evaporate the ponds and collect the water that way.

Please show me one article where Mahathir has treatened to cut the water supply? These kind of talk usually come from some group that have been rightly pissed off at the Singapore govt. But they are definitely not official govt. groups or individuals. For example, the MCA youth wing decades ago talked about cutting the water supply because their leader at that time, Tan Koon Swan, was going to jail.

hahaha......now 9 months after the 1st water agreement expired it is time to revisit this topic.....
the price of water had not increased as the cockerals had predicted....
the desalination plants in Singapore are operated by private companies based on DBOO (Design,built,own,operate) concept......
the first desalination plant (in Tuas) sold water to "PUB" at around SGD0.48/cu m (tender price) in its first year of operation in 2005/2006.
the second DBOO desalination plant is scheduled to start operation in 2013...
the point is not that desalination is the preferred choice but it is a viable alternative to diversify the sources of raw water.

Singapore 1st water contract expired is only about 10% daily usage. So will be not much different. When 2nd contract end that 50 year in future. Still very far away and no need to think.

If you are hard working you can easily do better than the laid back Malays. That's why many Malay managers are quite happy to hire the chinese Many chinese eventually go solo, setting up their own businesses with their relatives/friends. I notice that the Malaysian chinese are more into networking than their Spore counterparts. This helps them find lobangs.

Had a Malaysian chinese boss while working in a Spore MNC. This boss was very bright & everyday I would hear her talking to her kakis. They keep close touch with each other & help each other out, more than most Sporeans She eventually left to work in HK because of the better prospects. So don't think the Malaysian chinese can't make it

Malaysia is very unhappy to sell us water at 3 cents even more unhappy to buy it back at 50 cents. Does that explain why we need Newater ? Singapore is exploring these technologies to develop and export them. Scarcity of water will be a huge problem in many parts of the world. Singapore is making a virtue out of necessity.
