> Zaw: Moreover, for the idea of “thinking of ways to boost their productivity and reduce their over-dependence on foreign workers”, my question is simple. Can it be done to build current Singapore without those foreign workers???
I don’t think any Singaporeans will deny that there is a need for foreign workers in our economy. The question here is how many? Today, at 36% of our population, Singapore is indeed, OVER-DEPENDENT on foreign workers. Just to give you a better perspective, these 4 first world countries have about the same size as Singapore (about 4-5 millions) and in fact, their per capita GDP is better than Singapore’s. And do they over-depend on foreigners? See for yourself:
Population Citizen Non-Citizen
Ireland (2008) 4,442,100 88.9% 11.1%
Norway (2008) 4,799,300 93.7% 6.3%
Finland (2008) 5,326,314 97.3% 2.7%
Denmark (mid-2007) 5,451,826 94.8% 5.2%
Singapore (2006) 4,017,733 74.0% 26.0%
Singapore (2009) 4,987,600 64.2% 35.8%
It’s like asking, do we need food? Yes, of course, we need food to survive. But when you over-eat, you become fat and sluggish. All kinds of heart diseases will then start to appear.
