A HERD of wild boars roaming Upper Peirce Reservoir Park.

That's what a picture posted on citizen journalism website Stomp on Saturday supposedly shows.

The photo, which shows at least nine wild boars of various sizes, was sent in by netizen Chris.

Mr Louis Ng, executive director of Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres), said wild boars have been sighted in Singapore before, in places such as Lim Chu Kang and Choa Chu Kang, especially in densely vegetated areas.

They can also be found on Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong, he added.

"Just a few months ago, I chanced upon nine wild boars in Pulau Tekong during my reservist training," he recalled.

In July, a wild boar got stuck in a barrier along Kranji Express way and was freed by staff from Acres.

But is it common for boars to be seen in a herd?

In February, The Straits Times reported that the creatures, up to 10 at a time, trotted out from the undergrowth of the Lower Peirce Reservoir area at dusk and crashed through trees and bushes onto Old Upper Thomson Road.

As of last night, the Stomp posting had drawn more than 5,000 views and about 30 comments.

Most of those who commented were curious about the sighting.

In response, MrKaypoh wrote: "No, no, bak kua is better."

Mr Lim Zhiyang, 29, an engineer, told The New Paper: "When I have the time, I would want to go check out the papa and mama wild boars. I think the little ones maybe quite cute too."

But Ms Joanna Foo, 29, an engineer, has concerns about safety.

"I might avoid going to the park for the time being because I wouldn't want to get charged at by the wild boars," she said.

But Mr Ng, 32, said the members of the public need not be worried about their safety.

Wild boars, which are omnivorous, typically would not attack human beings, he explained, though the male ones may grow tusks.

He added: "Just like wild monkeys, wild boars are not hostile towards humans unless they are provoked.

"If you ever come across a wild boar, the best thing to do is to back away slowly. If you run, it may get startled and become aggressive."

Will the population of wild boars ever grow to a size that will become a major disturbance to the public?

Unlikely, Mr Ng said.

"Unless the public feeds them, their population would otherwise be controlled through natural deaths," he added.

In an August report, wildlife experts told The New Paper that they were seeing more wild animals running around our little island and swimming close to our shores.

Where's the lube for the last picture? All they need is the lube and slowing ease it in.... slowly push.....

That Mr Ng is a director??? And he is a complete idiot completely. Even that young man who never saw a wild boar before worried of being charged and rightful so.

I encouraged a wild boar during my NS before. The speed of a wild boar charge can left legs crippled and broken. After a wild boar charged at our section, we were left in cold sweat, as it charged all of a sudden and too fast too.

Mr Ng should be fired for giving stupid advise. It only proves he is inexperience and unsuitable for the job. A FT thrash perhaps.

quick set up a fire, take out ur jack-knife n start cutting boar head for penggang.
u never learn that in p.tekong meh?

I suspect MSK to be behind the appearance of these wild boars to terrorise the populace. His buddies must be very upset with his arrest. If can't bomb S'pore, then send in the wild boars!

Cannot be coz he is still in detention unless you tell me he escaped again. If escaped again, maybe. Must not just look out for tudung women but limping wild boars.

Wild boar babi..not halal!:p

It seems the majority of Singaporeans have no idea about indigenous wildlife. Wild pigs have always been in Sg, they're nothing new.

And, wild pigs in a herd are not dangerous; they consist of females and piglets. A group of you can corner them and possibly grab a slow one. You only need beware of solitary males.

Sometime back I visited Pulau Ubin and someone pointed to a lizard and told a bunch of kids it was a chameleon, I heard that and said it wasn't, there are no chameleons in Singapore. He refused to acknowledge and said chameleons are able to camouflage. I didn't want to argue that it was an Earless Agamid. I let him win since he was probably a loved uncle to those kids.

What are the schools teaching? Bring in some talented teachers please!

Cheers!

But simply telling the public that they are not dangerous is not a right thing to do. A malaysian I know, once saw someone having his belly punctured by tusks of a charging male wild boar.

And how did this come to happen? As he approached this tusker he envisioned bak kua?

As for people who swallow the bait, hook and sinker from an "authorty" - that's their own stupidity. There're similar happenings in good ole' USA when city folk visit National Parks and think wild bears are friendly like Yogi and Bubu who'll roll over for a picnic basket.

I'm not saying that ppl should go up to these piggies and pet pet them as the reality is that the wild pigs will naturally avoid close proximity to humans (especially Hokkiens ;)) so the public isn't in danger. No need to be alarmed, go enjoy the parks and feel fortunate to chance up wildlife in its natural habitat.

Cheers!

Now you know why the French do not allow Muslim women to wear tudung? Out of 10 aunties, 8 could be uncles! They can't tell the difference.

I heard that he was busy working in the palm oil plantation and it just happened. Maybe it was a bit dark to notice the animal searching for food nearby.
