PETALING JAYA: Singapore should explain the damaging remarks allegedly made by its senior government officials against Malaysia and the Prime Minister.

Government officials, when contacted yesterday, said it would be best to wait for Singapore’s explanation before any reaction was given.

“I am sure Singapore will explain soon enough. I am sure some people are already embarrassed with the leak,” said a senior official commenting on leaked US diplomatic cables exposed by WikiLeaks.

The cables, recorded in 2008 and 2009, involved Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) senior officials Peter Ho; Bilahari Kausikan and Tommy Koh in meetings with senior US officials.

Kausikan reportedly said: “A lack of competent leadership is a real problem for Malaysia”, citing the need for Datuk Seri Najib Razak to prevail politically over the murder case of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu.

It is understood Kausikan is heading a Singapore delegation to Kuala Lumpur on Dec 22 for the next meeting of the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Implementation Team (MSJIT) on the Points of Agreement.

Separately, Channel News Asia quoted Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo as saying the confidentiality of diplomatic communication must be respected.

He added diplomatic relations could not be done “on the basis that there is a camera in the room recording everything.”

“There will be more coming out in the future. I think it is best that we respect the confidentiality of diplomatic communication,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 — Datuk Ibrahim claimed today that a WikiLeaks expose on Singapore’s damning assessment of Malaysia revealed the island republic’s “jealous” nature.

The Perkasa president said Singapore had been holding a “grudge” against Malaysia for a long time, and that the harsh remarks made by the country’s senior government officials only showed its “true colours.”

“I am convinced that they (Singapore) are really jealous of Malaysia as they are not happy with Malaysia on many things.

“I am not surprised with the WikiLeaks report about Singapore... they are the ones that actually practice ‘politik sempit’ (narrow-minded politics). They have been holding a grudge against Malaysia for a long time,” Ibrahim told reporters today.

Leaked US State Department cables had revealed Singapore senior government officials as saying that Malaysia’s “decline” was due to “incompetent politicians”.

The WikiLeaks’ leaked information was published in two major Australian news publications yesterday — Sunday Age and The Sun-Herald.

The expose in the Sunday Age disclosed discussions between senior US officials and their Singapore counterparts Peter Ho, Bilahari Kausikan and Tommy Koh.

All three Singaporeans gave damning assessments of Malaysia.

The discussions between the Singaporean and US officials took place in 2008 and 2009. These officials were also less than complimentary about Malaysia’s prime ministers, past and present, with one of them calling Datuk Seri Najib Razak “an opportunist”.

Responding to this, Ibrahim also alleged that Singapore had vested interest in wanting to cause discord in Malaysia.

“I think they have their own agenda, and they also have political allies in Malaysia. The DAP was once part of Singapore’s PAP (People’s Action Party).

“They just want to mess around with Malaysia because they are not satisfied with Malaysia’s achievements,” said the Pasir Mas MP.

Ibrahim said proof of Singapore “hidden intent” in trying to bring Malaysia down was the island republic’s opposition to the “crooked bridge” linking Singapore with Johor.

“When Malaysia wanted to build a bridge, Singapore opposed to the point where Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had to suggest a crooked bridge. This is the clearest sign yet… if they want to damage Malaysia even in a subliminal way, they can and will,’ he said.

Ibrahim also scoffed at WikiLeaks’ sex expose on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, saying that he was “not at all surprised” with the revelation.

“What is there to be surprised? This is an issue which has long been discussed, dating back to the time when Tun (Dr Mahathir) was PM.

“If Anwar refutes the facts, he should just sue WikiLeaks, after all he likes suing people. What’s funny is that Nik Aziz, Hadi are acting like they are not surprised with the revelation,” said the former PAS man.

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers have demanded Singapore respond to a WikiLeaks revelation that regional intelligence agencies believe Anwar had committed sodomy, claiming that it was a “high-level conspiracy” implicating both the Malaysian and the island republic’s Special Branch police.

The PR de facto leader has so far dismissed revelations by WikiLeaks that Australian intelligence believes he engaged in sodomy, claiming the source was Malaysia’s Special Branch.

The opposition leader did not take calls to comment on Australia’s The Sun-Herald report but responded via his Twitter micro-blogging account when queried.

“Source? Polis SB Msia. Bukti tak ada (Who is the source? Malaysian police Special Branch. There is no proof whatsoever),” Anwar replied.

In an earlier reply, the former deputy prime minister wrote: “Source? Msian SB ha ha.”
