Lithium metal batteries deliver extremely high densities of energy, and if they are mishandled they can catch fire, a fire that can't be extinguished with halon, the most common kind of fire-suppression systems in passenger aircraft. That's one reason the FAA banned shipments of nonrechargeable lithium metal batteries on passenger planes in 2004. But that ban only applies in the United States; international authorities are still considering whether to enact such a rule. Cargo and passenger aircraft are free to carry lithium ion batteries, although they are subject to labeling and packing regulations.
 
As long as when there is VIP on board ban the batteries. Normal stinkees on board just load the plane full of batteries. No problem. Even explode, stinkees got no balls so nothing will happen. They just move on with their miserable existence.
 
Please think agian before comment on battery.
If totally ban meaning all mobilephone/camera/laptop........................anything with battery cannot bring into plane.

what are they talking about lithium ion banned on board planes in the US. Boeing uses it as their main batteries on all 787's.

Lithium batteries are disposable (primary) batteries that have lithium metal or lithium compounds as an anode. They stand apart from other batteries in their high charge density (long life) and high cost per unit. Depending on the design and chemical compounds used, lithium cells can produce voltages from 1.5 V (comparable to a zinc–carbon or alkaline battery) to about 3.7 V.

Lithium batteries are widely used in products such as portable consumer electronic devices.
