Here's why opposition should shun the "watchdog" label: It won't attract talented people into its ranks.
People who join politics especially opposition politics know the sacrifice in terms of personal and family time and career. No person of real substance is going to join an opposition party just to be watchdog. It is simply too expensive in terms of personal sacrifice and commitment.
There must be some ideal or national objective to strive for. A watchdog is not a national objective. It is a label used to castigate the opposition in a corner where it cannot have manoeuvrings.
A watchdog cannot take on national issues or represent a broad segment of the population. It is time to cast this PAP label away. I was absolutely disgusted when my friend said we need opposition because it is good to have watchdog. It degrade my view of the opposition.
