<!-- END social media sharing functions -->SINGAPORE: The first session of the 12th Parliament of Singapore will start on 10 October, five months after the General Election.

A statement by the Leader of the House, Ng Eng Hen, said that the sitting will begin with the election of the House Speaker and the swearing-in of 87 elected Members of Parliament and three Non-Constituency MPs.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at about 3.30pm, followed by the President's Address at 8.30pm.

In his address, the newly-elected President will lay out the priorities, policies and programmes of the government for its five-year term.

Parliament will then debate his speech from 17-21 October, where many new MPs are expected to make their maiden speeches.

This is also the first time the House will see the most number of elected opposition MPs in Parliament - a total of six from the Workers' Party.

The President usually crafts his speech with inputs from the government.

Observers say it will likely touch on issues such as the rising cost of living and engaging the views of Singaporeans.
