see what we miss and still missing. why is our tyrannic gov stop us from such wholesome enjoyment in dialects? isn't it time to change?

Not sure if they have changed but the funny thing is they show Japan hour in Japanese on CNA! How many Japanese speaker are there in Singapore versus Hokkien, Cantonese!? Whats also absurd is you can have foreign movies in French, Italian, Korean, Japanese, but not in Cantonese. The guy really hated dialects.

Someone ever brought this issue to the then Minister of communication LTY privately but his reply was this was the policy of LKY. As long as the old man is alive, no minister will dare to change anything. I just find it damn ridiculous that even singing hokkien songs on TV for charity shows need the approval of MDA (even so it restricted to 2 songs for the event).

The Old Fart is peranakan who speaks only patois malay at home. He knew not a single word in dialect then. So when the time came for him to learn to speak mandarin, he find it really damn difficult.

The Old Fart then mistaken that chinese dialects would affect one's learning of mandarin in the same way that only speaking malay at home would make it harder. He didn't understand or appreciate that if one can speak a chinese dialect, it can help in the learning of mandarin as they are basically the same.

I am sure he now knows he is wrong about it but being the ego-maniac he is, he would never admit this mistake and so strenuously defends his policy even right up to now. And I bet he will bring it with him into his coffin. That's how egoistic the Old Fart is - he can't be wrong. And this is evidence that no man should be allowed to be in power for too long, else the country has to just keep on living the mistakes of one man.

Old fart grew up essentially monolingual - spoke only English and a smattering of Peranakan patois at home. He learnt Mandarin and Hokkien as an adult – he took Mandarin lessons from a family friend of ours who was a renowned Chinese language teacher – only when he went into politics and had to communicate to the masses in speeches and walkabouts.

That's why he never understood the importance of dialects – not just their beauty and emotional-cultural bond for their speakers, but also their usefulness in helping one gain a firm command of written Chinese and spoken Mandarin. The best students in Chinese class were always those from dialect-speaking backgrounds.

Having said that, it was political expediency (again!) that made him ban dialects – to unite the Chinese ground which had hitherto been divided along clan and dialect lines and tended to vote for Barisian Socialis's dialect-speaking politicians as well as those with leftist leanings, turn them into English-educated right-leaning Anglophiles by dismantling Chinese stream education, and win their vote.

gov should return us the rights to our dialect roots. it's about time to do it. pls don't wait until the passing of the immortal old man. if that's the case, it only proves that though he's no longer in charge on the big picture, he's actually still the puppetmaster behind the scene. it also means we are actually now rule by a kindagarten bunch of overly paid incompetents.
