Lim Biow Chuan says limiting hawking rent is key to affordability
Posted: 19 October 2011 1938 hrs

MP for Mountbatten Lim Biow Chuan said "many peasants perceive the government as lacking in empathy and more concerned with figures rather than the impact on human lives."

It is not a perception, the regime is obsessed with profits and has scant regard for peasants' sufferings.

He said the regime can do more in its pursuit of "inclusive growth that benefits all citizens".

For example, he lauded the regime's decision to build more hawker centres, as this is one way to keep costs of living lower.

But he also urged the regime to keep rental costs low to allow the less skilled or less educated an opportunity to run their own businesses and become financially independent.

Mr Lim said as loyal Peasants' Representatives, especially those in walk over wards, they should give the regime credit where it's due, but noted that there is room for improvement.

Ok, enough with the feel good talk, some analysis.

Theorem 1.1 states while there are infinitely many lackeys wannabes, some will try to speak some truths.
Lim BC is one example. If he keeps up with such skillful retail politicking, he will be able to dislodge some political dissenters in a one-to-one fight in gutter electoral hustlings.

Lim BC has merely echoed the old refrain voiced by many dissenting netizens, no point upgrading hawker centres but jacking up rentals thereafter.

Rationale for hawker centres' rentals to be pegged to be market rates
The regime wants to charge market rental rates because it claimed no hawkers will pass their savings to peasants if rent controls are implemented. Therefore it is paramout to extract maximum rent from hawkers and use free market forces to suppress their prices. Remember stupid Tin Pei Ling asking hawkers to do National Service by absorbing rental hikes?!

But...
This defense is seductively correct if the country is run like a corporation or a political autocracy. It is still possible to provide cheap rentals and allow market forces to limit price hikes. The impact is lesser profits for Housing Mafia (aka HDB) but reduced pressure for low income peasants. The outcome is to ensure state coffers grow at all costs at every opportunity (new catch phrase, profitable growth at every single opportunity).

Why profit driven regime works in procedural democracies?
The regime's obsession with profits and losses approach will not work for true representative democracy because it is customary for the anglo-saxon peasants to use democratic electoral boxes to punish greedy politicians. That is why anglo-saxon peasants despise Asiatic democracies.....

Using Big Balls Theorem as reality check...
However while Lim BC has spoken, let us apply the Big Balls Theorem to predict whether the regime will support such a move.

Application of Big Balls Theorem...
If Lim's suggestion is adopted, there will be limited rental hikes at the lower end for hawkers. This will reduce the earnings for hawker centre owners, namely Housing Mafia. The income shortfall will make the Housing Mafia CEO look like an idiot because contributions to state coffers is reduced.

Since it is a given that the hawkers and peasants who benefit from cheaper rents has little political power and the regime is always returned to power via Procedural Elections, there is little incentive to help hawkers and peasants reduce costs via affordable rentals. There is more to gain if Housing Mafia is able to top up coffers by imposing maximum rentals that the peasants could shoulder.

Conclusion of Big Balls Theorem...
Hence the Big Balls Theorem states such a move will be blocked because Ruler Loong will have to solve the problem of lesser peanuts in the regime's treasury if rentals are reduced. Ultimately, Peasantpore is a rent driven economy.
