SINGAPORE - Employers choose to hire non-Singaporeans because they are flexible in taking up jobs locals avoid, not because they are cheaper to employ, a local survey has found.

The JobStreet.com survey of 1,400 Singaporean jobseekers and 200 employers found that 93 per cent indicated that their companies hire non-Singaporeans, making up an average of 30 to 50 per cent of the company's workforce.

While 66 per cent of locals considered the low cost of labour the reason for hiring non-Singaporeans, only 16 per cent of employers cited this as the reason.

Four in 10 said they hired foreigners because they are more flexible in taking up jobs locals avoid, 24 per cent said foreigners were more diligent and work longer hours, while another 20 per cent said they were better skilled in their areas of expertise.

The survey also found that local employees felt strongest about wages being potentially depressed by lower-cost foreign labour. Another concern was losing employment and career advancement opportunities to non-Singaporeans.

Country Manager of JobStreet.com Singapore Anthony Ung said: "Based on the over 35,000 job postings available on JobStreet.com every month, we do see many local employers adopting the "Singaporean-First" policy when hiring."

"It will be beneficial for local employees to focus on putting their best effort forward rather than speculating about the threats of a co-worker. Very often, these speculations are not reflective of what their employers may think," he added.

A typical F&B job for $1,200 per mth tell you to do 12 hours shift work per day. Are you 'flexible' enough to accept? Only foreigners can stoop so low.

Of course, they bunk in together at a bed space at only $200 peR bed space. They will take their meals within their F & B outlet. Typical outlet boss will feel that they are doing GOOD and something charitable that they allow their staff to eat in.

They can take home easily $600 nett per month !

Cheep, Cheeo, Cheep......

$600 nett is better than being jobless in a Chinese province.

A sad reality but true.

Just take a look at the airport terminal. The local employees are well into their 70s pushing the carts compared to the young foreign trash. No doubt about the productivity. Sometimes quite sad to see the locals struggling at ends.:(

When you read 'Employers choose to hire non-Singaporeans because they are flexible in taking up jobs locals avoid', that's double talk for 'they're easily exploited',period.
