Jeremy Hunt, who has been dubbed ‘the new Boris Johnson’, suffered another embarrassing gaffe when the British foreign secretary mistakenly told his hosts in China that his wife Lucia Guo was Japanese, when in fact, she is Chinese.
Sitting down to talk to the Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi and other officials, Jeremy Hunt attempted to demonstrate his family ties to the country, which were met with laughter when he decided to quickly correct himself.
Hunt said: ‘My wife is Chinese and my children are half-Chinese and so we have Chinese grandparents who live in Xian and strong family connections in China’ and these comments could have threatened to offend officials after decades of Chinese-Japanese tensions. But who is Lucia Guo?
