Why Are Old Car Number Plates In Demand In S'pore

I see many new cars bearing VERY old number plates in S'pore. Check the classifieds and the sale of these car numbers is mind boggling. Instead of 'moving forward', why are we going backwards?
Are these old number plates considered as status symbols like single digit car plates?

The SA, SB and other S's can be spotted on new cars. E series still not that old, especially EZ.
