Those of you think the PAP is bad should get a taste of what it's like to be governed by a paralysed parliament that debates issues to death but gets nothing done.

In Singapore, all bills get passed in the first sitting. Raise your GST, withhold your CPF, bring in more foreigners, your ruling party MP is not going to vote with his constituents in mind. Our government just do what they want, we just suck thumb.

Define 'what is best for the country'. I disagree what they have done is 'what is best for the country'. It's not even matter of taking the tough road for paradise later, it's more like the government is intent at milking their denizens for all they are worth. So that can continue running $30 billion surpluses.

Still, the focus here shouldn't be a comparison with other countries. Each and every one has their policies and benefits for their people. What we see here is a slow yet gradual and constant increase in fares with little/minimal observable improvement made to the public transport system. Fare hikes have the greatest impact in long term, and justifications must be appropriately made to ensure that such a move is for the greater good(though this is hard to imagine)

Both transport companies incidentally have the same biggest shareholder that has a name that starts with "T".

The PAP is well paid but they deliver progress. The NZ government generates hot air but nothing changes.

From the above, I have a question for you: Why don't you return to Singapore rather then to remain in NZ? It's not as if you cannot afford to relocate again. Given your wealth, a unit or 2 in Sentosa Cove shouldn't be any problem for you.

I prefer the weather in NZ and I enjoy the slow pace of life and the great outdoors, the boating, the fishing, the cycling, the tramping and the scenic photography opportunities. It suits my current lifestyle and hobbies. Singapore doesn't have the space.

Government policies in NZ don't affect me at this stage of my life. I have been through 3 governments.... right, left and now somewhere in the middle. Nothing much changes. Taxes went up with the left wing government and came down with the right wing government but it made no difference to me.

As long as I can pursue my interests, I am happy.

The money has to come from somewhere to subsidize the travel and it is usually from the pockets of the ratepayers which is you and I.

In Auckland, the rate payers are stung to the tune of $116 MILLION dollars annually to subsidize discounted transport schemes.

At the end of the day, the devil is always in the details. Things are never as rosy as they look. I learned that very quickly after emigrating.

SBS & SmRT are making tons of money. Don't forget that these companies are monopolies. The ex-CEO of SMRT was making something like $1.62 million in pay. So I don't think it's about subsidizing "lesser mortals". More about making "super normal" profits i.e. abnormal profits.

You argue withe 60% daft , they will admonish you & say, the "STAKEHOLDERS", who are the stakeholders ( shareholders), major stake holders?? They hold the STAKE & make steaks out of us, commuters....
