I was listening to the radio & heard the NDP song about some people who thought that Spore wouldn't make it. Even LKY likes to boast about the success of Spore despite some naysayers saying "Spore couldn't make it"

Got me thinking about who these people were who thought Spore couldn't make it? Anyone out there can shed some light on this

I think for any small country achieving independence, naturally there will be those who question its ability to make it. Especially among its own people...
But the 'fishing village' thing is total BS... Singapore was already the 7th or 8th busiest port in the early 1900s, more than 100 years ago...

Singapore won't make it in the next 100 years. It has been lucky that we had survive so far, and only because other nations themselves were struggling to survive and being 3rd world they do not have the means. Through the benevolence of these and also of the bigger powers, we scrape through. Money cannot buy the goodwill of the hawks if they so wish to destroy Singapore, and lately being cash-rich but resource poor is not a good thing.

The US MNCs exported the jobs to where labor was cheaper, the 3rd world. Then the Japanese up their game & built superior products, then it was the turn of the Taiwanese, Koreans, etc

The americans took their eye off the ball, and got left behind. Sad to say it's the same thing that's happening in Spore. the PAP rested on their laurels & became lazy. They were more pre-occupied with making $$$ then providing a lean and effective gov't.

They did make some good quality stuff, no doubt. West German products were as good if not better in some other products like cars and machines.
